help with a hat pattern

I'm probably just having a numpty moment here - but help!    I want to make the Cecile hat from the new Yarn Forward.  It's aran weight and the pattern says I need 4mm dpns and a 4.5mm 16inch circ.

It says "using smaller needles cast on 80 stitches".  Then it says to work 5 inches of rib, then there's an increase round (which almost doubles the no of stitches) and then the patterning.  But it DOESN'T tell me where to change up to the bigger size needle  Confused

So, do I cast on with the 4mm and do all the rib and then change to the 4.5mm circ for the pattern once I've increased the stitch count?  Or do I cast on with the 4mm and change up immediately and do the ribbing on the larger needle too?  Except I don't know whether the circ would be too long for just 80 stitches  Confused  I don't want to find I can't get the hat on because the ribbing is too tight.

Any thoughts or advice ....?

Hi FC
80 sts sounds about right for an Aran brim, and I use 100-110 for DK.
Personally I would use 4mm for the ribbing, and transfer to a thread in order to try it on after about an inch. (Saves frogging 5 inches if it's not right)

Then I'd do all of the ribbing on 4mm, changing after the increase row. My increase stitches always look neater this way.

Well, i found this on Ravelry, but it didn't say anything about the needles...

Cecile in issue 10

Rounds 3 and 7 of the chart are incorrect, those in the magazine (page 18 ) should be replaced with:

Rnd 3: C4R, k4, C4L; repeat from to end.

Rnd 7: K2, C4L, C4R, k2; repeat from to end.

I'd probably go with the smaller needles for the rib, then change to the bigger size. I can't help you with the needle lengths cos i rarely knit in the round normally, i usually use two circs or magic loop just cos i never have the right length needles for "proper" knitting int he round Confused

I'm glad you asked FC, if you hadn't then Franney wouldn't have posted about the errata, and I would have had trouble when I came to make it! Thank you both.

Thanks!  I'll go with rib on the smaller ones and then switch up.

Cheers for your advice  Very Happy
