Help! How to finish off my scarf? FINISHED! With a photo

My very 'organic' looking scarf is long enough now - I've got some yarn left and was wondering about adding a very simple 'edge' to finish it off - maybe something a bit lacy - but it has to be easy to do - I need step-by-step instructions. I thought about just adding a fringe but decided against it. Any ideas / good links?

How about a nice scallopy crochet edging??
carolinne

do a photo and that will help us to suggest edgings
KnittingLadybird

photo would be good sprite....you could always just finish off with some simple chain loops.

Let's see and then we can decide. Smile

Ok - photo of scarf as requested. It's erm....a bit rough!! Guess which end I started haha. Oh well - first attempt at crochet and I s'pose it won't notice as a scarf! Looks pretty awful though now I've laid it out. Several people have told me how much easier crochet is than knitting - I agree it seems much faster - I only started this on Easter Monday and I frogged 50% of it a couple of days ago - but I reckon getting an even tension is harder. Any tips? I'm guessing using a silk yarn might not have been the best thing for a beginner?

It looks lovely. Smile What about a beaded fringe?
Sprite64

Mmm I did wonder about that - the silk is quite different thicknesses in places though but maybe I could just use a few beads.
carolinne

it is very pretty.

what about a long tasselly fringe?
Jobo

I think that looks really nice - I think I might go around the whole scarf with some crochet shells but the other ideas are good too - the beaded tassels idea is a great one Very Happy

I was thinking beaded tassel combined with Linz's scallopy long chains done up into scallops, but with beads. does that make any sense?

It's lovely!! I wish my crocheting was half that good!

That sounds good but I don't have that much yarn left Sad I had another look at it today and wondered about making some small flowers with beads in their middles and edging it with them - not much clue HOW to do this though haha!
Sprite64

Maybe a bit like this flower - but I want to add a bead in the centre:

Lovely idea! Smile

I think your scarf is lovely. Those flowers are cute, and popping a bead at the centre is a great idea.

That looks lovely...a very pretty flower complete beads is a great finishing touch.

Well, if (when!) I do some more crochet I will probably look back at this and think it looks awful - but nevermind - I'm quite pleased with it as it's my first attempt at crochet! I found a simple pattern for a flower and had a go at that but it was too big - so I played around a bit and made up a similar one but smaller. I made 12 flowers, 6 for each end and sewed them on so that there is one each side of the scarf (to erm, hide my rather wobbly edge haha. My 'end' bit is much neater than my start!). Ialready had some beads which I sewed into the middle of each flower. I was worried it might turn out a bit heavy but it seems ok Very Happy Very pleased to have used up some stash - I bought this Debbie Bliss silk totally on a whim probably 12 months ago and had no idea what to do with it. I only have a tiny bit left - will keep for 'repairs' as I'm not sure how well I fixed the flowers on!!!

It's absolutely georgeous, not in the least bit awful. I love it Smile Exquiste Very Happy

It's beautiful!. well done on finishing it off, you have done a lovely job!

carolinne

Thanks everyone! I think I'll be keeping my eyes out for a decent crochet book now - I've got a guide to all the basics in an old reader's digest of all things crafty which is years old. I even found myself wondering about crocheting a big throw type thing - we don't have central heating (that works anyway!) - just a coal fire so it can get a bit chilly in the evenings if the fire isn't lit.
Aknita

Sharon, it's beautiful, really it is.
