HELP - drop spindle

My drop spindle arrived today and ofcourse I had to ahve a go straight away. It comes with instructions but my first attemtp was really awful thick stuff which wasn't really properly spun. Anyone know of any good tutorials for doing it properly? Preferebly with pics or even better, video? I've got to finish Sockamania's september socks today but I've got a feeling I'll be spinning until I go to bed tonight. Laughing My aim is to spin some dyed merino tops I got today into some sock yarn but don't think I'l lbe doing that just yet. I'm going to get some of my pencil roving out that I got from Natalie a while back and have a go with that to see if it's eaiser.

Any help and hints very welcome.

Thankyou. Very Happy

I found a couple of videos on youtube which were quite good. I didn't save the links though - doh! Just do a search for drop spindle - there's quite a few on there. I haven't played with mine for a while - OH and I were both having a go - he got the hang of it before me. At first I was definately trying to spin too much at once. You've reminded me that I must have another try!

Try this one for written instructions.

Remember to follow the drafting info on the blog (way back on 8th July).

It does take a bit of time to get the drafting, spinning, eyes etc all working together. Try just doing 15 mins a day for a week. No-one just picks up a spindle for the first time and makes good, thin, even yarn.

Be gentle with yourself and take a few deep breaths. Pre-drafting is the most crucial thing. Get the drafting sorted out and the rest is a lot easier.

And remember to keep what ever you make, it's your first yarn and no matter how lumpy, it's very special stuff.
All the spinners at my guild still have their first yarn.... and it's all lumpy!
Claire is right, do fifteen minutes a day, every day, and take a photo every day too to remind you how far you've come.

Thank you everyone. Very Happy I knew I'd get a lot of help on here. I've watched the video clip from You Tube again, watched it SAturday night for the first time, and I've read the Knitter's Review piece that n mentioned on another post.

I had another go this morning and it's looking better. Can't decide whether it's easier to use tops or pencil roving. Did some quite thick single yesterday with the pencil roving and have done some thinner this morning. Taken the thin stuff off the spindle now and started another lot and then I'll try to ply it. Shocked Will see how I get on with that. I'ts fun anyway. Not getting much knitting done and the fleece is going everywhere. Laughing
