Heel turn instructions anyone?

I'm knitting socks in the car at the mo - OH drives, I knit! I finished the heel flap on the way to work and I want to turn the heel on the way home later - but I don't have my book with me and I can't quite remember the instructions - mostly for the first bit where you set it up. I've got 40 sts. on the heel flap.

Anyone able to help!?

(I know I can look on the web - but I'm being lazy. Eeek. I should be able to remember how to do this by now!)

I had a look at the Opal kids sock pattern on the ptyarn website and providing you are turning youe heel on 20 stitches it will be something like this:

HEEL TURNING:
I gave it my usual box-like heel in this manner:
ROW #1: (Right Side) K13, K2tog, K1, turn. [4 unworked stitches remain]
ROW #2: P8, P2tog, P1, turn. [4 unworked stitches remain]
ROW #3: K9, K2tog, K1, turn. [2 unworked stitches remain]
ROW #4: P10, P2tog, P1, turn. [2 unworked stitches remain]
ROW #5: K11, K2tog, K1, turn. [0 stitches remain
ROW #6: P12, P2tog, P1. [0 stitches remain] NOTE: Heel is approx 1-3/4 inches long.

ETA: Derr...I read it as 40 stitches cast on in total...derr sorry!! Laughing

I think the general thing with knitting heel flaps is when you are ready to turn you slip the first stitch, then knit one or two stitches past halfway then decrease then knit another so:

sl1, k21, ssk, k1, turn

..then it  is usually p5, but I could be wrong...fel free to totally ignore me! Smile

Does that help?! Smile

and this one:

Continue these two rows until heel flap measures 2.5 (3) inches. End on a second row (so that the purl side is facing for the next row.) The slipped stitches at the beginning of each row form little 'loops' that make it easy when you need to pick up stitches later.

TURN THE HEEL: (really, this is easy -- just follow the directions and don't worry about having stitches left on the needle every time you turn the work.)

1st row: purl 13(14), p 2 tog. P1; TURN;

2nd row: slip 1, K7, slip 1, K1, psso, K1; TURN;

3rd row: slip 1, P8, p2Tog; p1; TURN;

4th row: slip 1, K9, slip 1, K1, psso, K1; TURN;

5th row: slip 1, P10, p2Tog; p1; TURN;

6th row: slip 1, K11, slip 1, K1, psso, K1; TURN;

You should now have 14(16) stitches on your needle. If you are making the S/M sock, you would be done turning the heel. If you are making L/XL, you will have 15 st. on one needle, and one stitch (the 16th) on the other needle. Proceed:

have fun!
