Finally tried toe-up!And I love it! Can't believe I haven't tried it before Actually I didn't mean to make this sock, I decided to practise the cast on and grabbed the nearest ball of yarn But the cast-on went so well I just kept going
So, first toe-up:
And my first short-row heel (and toe) too - I'd always been put off by anything involving wraps cos they are ALWAYS holey for me but this method with yo instead is great, I shall be using it again. There really are no holes, see?
And a gratuitous shot of the patterning:
So, that's two more of my knitting resolutions for 2008 nailed
The pattern is Express Lane from The Inside Loop and the yarn is Cherry Tree Hill SockItToMe in Serengeti It's a great pattern actually, enough pattern to keep interested but easy enough to do in front of the telly. And really quick too, I started this Saturday teatime and I've nearly done the first sock

oooh that pattern sounds worth a try even just to learn a new way to do short rows - cos i always get holes too! They look lovely.

what a lovely pattern, might be tempted to try that too, kind of lost interest in sock knitting at the mo.

It's looking great - well done you. I think I'll give it a try too, as I tried the short rows with wrapping and it looked a mess.

thank you! I really do recommend the pattern, even if only for the short row method. I think I'm hooked on toe-up now, mind you I should know by now that it doesn't take much to get me addicted to something new where socks are concerned

well done on giving toe ups a go...I rather enjoy toeups but they don't fit mam properly so I had to change the zokni sock pattern but that pattern has a short row heel. I also prefer the YO method too.
did you do wendys magic cast on for the toes?

Serengeti - now there's a word to conjure up a mental image. What aptly named yarn, the colours are beautiful.
Well done - it's going to be a lovely sock, and kudos for trying something new.

Thank you everyone!
KLB, no, I did the toe as per the pattern - so a provisional cast on and then it's short rows exactly the same as the heel. I did like getting to the heel and the pattern basically says "do what you did for the toe" . But I have had a go at the magic cast on as well and I like that just as much
I think my next task is to learn exactly which crochet loop to knit into in a provisional cast on so that it unzips nicely and I don't have to spend ages painstakingly unpicking it around the live stitches

if you turn your chain around you will see one side has 2 flat loops (like chain stitch in sewing)and the other side has a middle bump or loop.....that's the side you need FC....hth

It looks lovely! I queued the pattern in ravelry when the inside loop went live, but tbh, i was a little bit put off by it being toe up.....glad to gear it went ok for you, maybe I'll try it after all

Ah, I think that might help! Thanks! So .... I knit into that middle bump on the back and not either of the loops in the chain stitch bit? I think up until now I've been mixing them all up when I'm doing it and then some bits unzip and some bits don't Cheers KLB!

OK, these were a stupidly fast knit finished the pair already I think that's a record for me! And honestly, I wasn't working solidly on them, did lots of work and other stuff in between. They just flew along They're on my feet now and are staying there for at least the rest of the day, if not tomorrow as well

I must try toe up this year. When I am brave enough.

Wow - that was fast missus Lovely yarn and pattern. Glad you found the short row heel and toe ok to do - I always do those, but haven't tried a toe up before. That looks like just the pattern to start with though!

Wow, you're really going on my recommendation? Slightly worried now I really hope it works as well for you as it did for me. Keep up posted? Looking forward to hearing how it goes, and well done on Rogue too
Fi - I've been too afraid to try toe-up for years! Go on, give it a go, it's really not as hard as it seems once you get into it.
