February Lady-alongAfter seeing some lovely FLSs recently I just have to have one Anybody else casting on for this? I really fancied an 'eau de nil' one like Linz made but nothing suitable in stash so I'm maybe going bright pink (cos I loved Yarnsnobs pink Malabrigo one on Rav - take a look here . It's so hard to choose a colour as there are so many lovely ones on Rav - I spent about an hour looking through 100 pages of finished ones last night
So I'm going for fuschia pink Jaeger Shetland aran - have swatched and it's good and I'm just going to cast on
|

|
I cast one on in Hipknits Aran Silk - but was debating whether or not to frog it and cast on a top down mini cardi I saw on Ravelry, havent got much yarn to play with - so was going to do a shortish, sleeveless February similiar to one Kerrie put up on her blog a while back - off to dither a bit more
|

|
I fancy another one too - but stash only provides cream or lilac - neither of which take my fancy just now.
And, of course, I have far too much otn and planned for Christmas knits, so this may be a 2009 project for me.
Must resist Deep Purple Aran. Must resist Deep Purple Aran. Must resist Deep Purple Aran. Must resist Deep Purple Aran.

Oooh PURPLE!!!!! Yes!!! And a silk one - yummm
You know I've been singing 'Who's That Lady' (Isley Brothers) all morning Do you remember that?? Wow just listening to it on Youtube - brilliant!!
My pink is exactly the same colour as my pjs(pink & red tartan)/slippers/dressing gown - ooh I do like a nice bright pink

I do really want one but alas it will have to wait until after Christmas as i still have some little gifts i'd like to make for special people who deserve them, but i will join in at a later date

I have to admit girls I'm beginning to feel the "pull" of the FLS but it's going to go down my project list not to the top so I won't be joining in. Once I get out of here (retire) my initial plans are to finish off 3 sweaters which are WIPs. Two of them will be invaluable for the winter as they cosy aran weight. AND I have a design project in mind, I got some gorgeous Lei from POSH in lovely Honeybun colour and I want a special sweater from it, I have ideas but it will take careful planning as I reckon I don't have any spare.

YUMMY - I'm thinking of candy floss and marshmallows now!!
And I've remembered that I have New Lanark Aran that I bought AGES ago at the SECC - I wonder if 500g will be enough? It's a boring neutral though, not purple, but I might get more wear from it - mmm - brain cells on overdrive - must get some stuff finished first.

That's a lovely shade of pink Ali, just the thing for dull winter days

Might cast on for another one, but want to get my aran cardie done first I do have some nice Stylecraft aran weight which might be suitable
|

I know franney!!! I just love bright colours on a day like today
Linda I think 500g might well be enough I'm assuming that much - pattern says 850 yds for a size 37.5" finished size. That's about 778m so in my yarn that is 4.8 100g balls. Angieknitsagain did a gorgeous dark blue one in the NL aran.

Oooh what a lovely choice!!!! Well, much tho I like the sound of the Cocoon you would need to swatch quite a bit to get guage wouldn't you - but how soft would that be And I like the sound of all the other shades esp the Wild Rose and Russet!!!!

Linda, I used less than 500g for mine (used stylecraft aran) and you are a lot slimmer than me. You can adapt the pattern to do shorter sleeves or a shorter body too if you wish.
Last time I did a top down cardi and worried about running out I did about 4" of the body below the sleeves then held those stitches on a holder while I worked the sleeves. I then knew that I could use up the rest of the yarn to knit the rest of the body.

Count me in - going to pick mine back up and carry on with it
I'm still aiming for a cropped sleeveless version.

I did that with the black one Hilary - I did the back the minimum length I'd be happy with, then did both the sleeves at once, then used the rest to make the back a bit longer, to cover my bum a bit.
It's the yarn I bought when we went to the SECC - can you remember when that was?
But I'm NOT going to cast on until the Christmas knits are done.

It's lovely, I do want to make one, but there are so many other things I want to make too - and I bought the yarn for Wicked at AP but still haven't got round to casting that on.
I like the idea of your pink one Pictish - I have some dark pink I could use, or there's always the black I bought for Wicked....and use the pink for that instead - oh 'eck The rate I'm going I won't end up casting on either of them or anything else come to that

I might start again in a different yarn - worried about carrying on with my Aran Silk ater reading about others on Ravelry....

This is a cardie on my to-do list. Maybe I will get round to it now! I might just look at suitable arans in stash today
|
melody yarns
|
Heh heh! I looked, I found, I cast on!!
Knitting in dark red Wendy Aran with Wool so similar to Stylecraft aran in composition. I've had the yarn in stash for YEARS and bought it when we lived in the old house, or maybe even before that, so definitely a stashalong garment!!
The aran is knitting up nicely and softly... but a question for all you seasoned FLS-knitters... how does the garter stitch band sit on the finished garment? Does it flip out or does it sit well?
|
KnittingLadybird
|
Debs it sits lovely imo...I used the aran that was previously yours and just lightly steamed it and mum looks fab in it
Sis want's one but I might do me one first....

Good to know it's been knitted and loved by someone!!
Thanks for the advice Linz - I'm so thrilled with the way this is turning out and I was always so sceptical about top down knitting. I think that this garment and pattern could convert me somewhat!
|
KnittingLadybird

I was converted to top down knitting when I made the 'tree jacket'...It's quite my favourite way now (no sewing up ).

I am sooo tempted to cast on. I have the yarn in y stash and its calling my name...
Must resist...
Christmas knitting to do...
Feeling too weak...
|
melody yarns
|
Oh Kate do cast on! I have far too many things that need finishing off but it's an amazing pattern and the way the garment is constructed will leave you wanting to knit 'just one more row'. And the aran feels so soft and squidgy in garter stitch on 5mm needles...mmmm, luvverly!

A bit more done on the yoke today. I was supposed to be ironing but you know how it is I've just done the second buttonhole
|
pictish
|
I might just get mine out again soon Think I'm up to the same point - tho I must say I just did my own buttonhole method rather than using hers
|
melody yarns
|
I did my own buttonhole too and it worked out quite well. I k2tog, yrn twice, k2tog then on the next row I knitted into the first loop and knitted into the back of the second loop of the double yrn
|
janice
|
No I didn't like the look of the buttonhole when I used the suggested method I'm feeling rather tempted to go upstairs and get a ball of yarn, and get another started, you lot are terrible enablers

| melody yarns wrote: | | I did my own buttonhole too and it worked ot quite well. I k2tog, yrn twice, k2tog then on the next row I knitted into the first loop and knitted into the back of the second loop of the double yrn |
That's exactly how I did mine because it seems quite stretchy (well it stretched enough for those big buttons on Mams FLS) but it didn't look massive and could've gone with smaller buttons too.
I really want to make one for me but I like the green I made Mams in.....So dilemma is do I treat myself to another colour aran or do another stitch pattern to make it different??? Oh the possibilities.
|
melody yarns
|
So how was the suggested buttohole worked then? I just nicked that method that I used from my Lupin jacket pattern cos it worked really well and you don't get a loop of yarn or anything left over. It's really neat.
|

I think it was the reversible one row buttonhole off 'knitting on the net'

A quick question - I've finished the increases on the garter stitch yoke and knitted the eyelet increase row and the three rows of garter stitch after the eyelet row and the pattern now says to knit until it almost meets under the arms. But how much more did you all have to knit until you got there? I think I'll be knitting another 1 - 1.5 inches of garter stitch before mine meets which is a shame because it's the most boring part of the garment so far!
|
loisamelia
|
I left out the eyelet increases as I didnt want them too high up. Like you Debs I found I had quite a bit of GS to do after all the increases so I just kept knitting unitl it almost met under my arms then did some regular increases and got stuck into the lace bit
I also couldnt be bothered to work out how to evenly space the eyelets so they looked right
|
melody yarns
|
Ahhh that's not too bad then thank you Lois at least I'm on the right track
|

Well I've tinked my yoke back and knitted less from the eyelet increases because when I tried it on the arms stuck out like two massive shoulder pads... and then my lace went wrong after I'd divided for the arms etc I'm beginning to feel like shoving the lot in the kitchen bin
If nothing else the pattern as made me realise that I can do top-down garments!

Have you looked in the KAL on Rav Debs cos I think I remember reading that blocking helped the garter stitch bit from sticking out. It's be a shame to give up cos you're over halfway now!!! Put it away for a bit and do something else I say
Janice that sounds LOVELY!!!
|
melody yarns
|
It looks a lot better with less garter stitch Ali - and the reason I decided to knit it in cheaper yarn was that if it went wrong I wouldn't mind so much
It's a fun knit though so I'll keep plodding on with it. I'm not overly keen on lace patterns anyway and especially the ones that go slip and knit, yo, k1, yo, k2tog cos I always get lost around the yo's !!
|
pictish
|
Well I am a bit of a laceophobe (if there's such a word ) so not looking forward to that bit at all
|
melody yarns
|
It's a fairly easy pattern to memorise but I tihnk I get a bit confuzzled just thinking about it
|
melody yarns
|
Yippee!!! The lace part is knitted for the main body now and just the garter edging to do. Then the sleeves and it's done!
How is everyone else getting along?
|

I'm still trundling along I can honestly say that my perfectionism is getting in the way. I'm sure it's going to look terrible once it's actually completed. Add to that I'm using yarn from a previous disaster it's making me think it's not going to work. BUT I'm too stubborn to let it defeat me

Ah, I have the same perfectionist stumbling block Craftylady in everything I do. It's a mixed blessing for me
The Feb sweater has been deknitted and deknitted to the point where it was nearly frogged several times over; and I'm not over-enamoured by my sleeve yoke at the moment either And I'm not happy with my original yarn choice for this but it's too late to change my mind now
I'm determind to finish mine though as well!
|
loisamelia

I havent picked mine up for about a month now I got bogged down with DH's jumper which I didnt finishe in time for Christmas so I will go back to the FLS soon if I can remember how the pattern goes
I am still finishing the lace on the body, not sure how long to do it as I have read they grow quite a bit when you block it
|
melody yarns
|
| loisamelia wrote: | | I am still finishing the lace on the body, not sure how long to do it as I have read they grow quite a bit when you block it |
Oh poopypants! I got the length just bloomin right as well Maybe mine won't extend too much cos it's in Wendy wool mix aran???? She said hopefully...???
|
melody yarns
|
Now most of the way down the first sleeve which is knitting up a lot quicker than the body thank goodness However.... my lace on the sleeve is noticeably tighter than on the body, probably because I'm using bamboo DPNs rather than a metal Addi circular which I used for the body piece. I'm not liking the change in tension at all
|

Good for you getting on with it Debs

Frogged mine last night I had left it and couldn't work out how I'd done the decreases plus I was knitting the yarn at a looser guage than it should have been and I didn't like the way it looked I'm going to have a think about what I can use instead - don't want to use expensive stuff for my first top down thing but don't especially want to buy anything either

I'm still straggling along pictish. Wish I had the guts to frog but need to put it behind me without having to think of having to use the yarn for a 3rd time in something else iyswim:): There's too much going on in January for me to find the time to either knit very much or take photo's so will perhaps get it finished in February?

I have given it a different name because it's quite quite different
Stocking stitch yoke, no eyelet increases, so it's fitted like a regular cardi, so are the sleeves.

It's yummy and warm in New Lark Aran - I don't know if it's the wool or the silk mix

Well, I've had my tea so thought I'd better upload pics before I settle down.
I don't know if this is the pure wool or the silk mix - bought ages ago at the SECC craft show. It's light graphite, grey with little flecks of tan and baby blue. It looks beige when you put it with brown
Bargain buttons - real shell for 30p each
It's lovely and warm, and looks a lot better than this pic - DH is a plonker - it's a digital camera with a screen on the back, he's trying to look through the view-finder and getting narked with it.

I did have short hair Joy - really short and spiky on the top.
Then I started making hats and couldn't wear them, so decided to let it lie flat and grow it so I could wear the hats. Not really, but fancied a change. I'll probably get it cut in the summer if the length starts to annoy me. The back is longer than the picture shows, and it's just about long enough to put up, but I'm not very good at doing it.
Thank you for all your lovely comments.
