FCS KAL 2008

It seems there are a few of us wanting to make this who maybe didn't make it last time around - and even some maybe that did Wink The pattern is here  Razz

I will be joining shortly - it will be my first lace shawl - eeek!!  I have some Handmaiden Seasilk I plan to use Razz But I might do a trial version with something less 'special' Laughing

So come on what are you waiting for? Laughing
ClaireUK

Raises hand tentatively

Miss, me Miss......but be patient with me : )
Anna

I'll join but I won't be able to start for a few weeks. I'm not sure if I've enough of anything in stash to make it with - what's the metreage, I couldn't see it on the link? Will one lonely ball of sock yarn do?
Aknita

One lonely ball of sock yarn will be perfect Anna Very Happy

Claire - behave yourself, you'll be fine!
cazzie

I'm in too Very Happy
harrysmum

I'm going to stick my hand up very tentatively - I have some yarn put aside for it, but I'm not sure whether the pattern would suit stripes!

There's 200g of yarn there - so I'm not sure if I should use that or chose something I've only got one skien of?  It's NDS so absolutely scrummy!
Comments please!

Oooo lovely NDS yarn Very Happy  How much of the Green/Purple mix is there - that could be enough on its own

There's only about 60g - and there's 60g of the semi solid pink - perhaps that edged in the pink/ lilac would work (one's pink with less lilac & the others lilac with less pink)

I assume the pattern finishes at the bottom as you wear it?

Thinking about it.

Not sure if I am really brave enough, but I do have some lovely Regia turquoise solid.
ClaireUK

Does anyone know how much yardage is needed for the edgeing only? I'm thinking of a contrast edgeing here?

Oh do try it if you like the shawl - it isn't a difficult lace pattern, honest.  It looks much more complicated than it actually is.  I've made one from sock yarn and have some silk to make another, (not sure if I will join the KAL though as I hadn't planned to do it just yet.)

350 yards is quoted in the pattern.  I know cos somehow the puter pressed buttons n it appeared on my screen so printed it off quick before it disappeared again  Laughing Hope hubby doesn't question the £3.42 debit from his account!!!!

So it looks as if I'm in this one.  I wonder if this is the pattern I've been waiting for for the STR skein I won in one of the auctions last year?

Need to go and have a rummage in my stash drawer. TTFN
Aknita

this one was made with around 80g of n's sock yarn. I knitted three extra pattern repeats using 4.5mm needles.

I am not sure how much I used in the contrast Claire, but used the contrast yarn for both bind off rows.

There is a FCS group on Ravelry and shedloads of FCS's to look through too.

I have seen them made with all sorts of yarns, including Effektgarn 8/2 by Kauni which gives a rainbow effect of colours Harrysmum.

Now then, as for meterage. The yarn used in the pattern is not quite the same as standard sock yarn - it's more of a Posh Emily than a Yarn Yard iyswim - more like a sportsweight than a fingering yarn. So one skein of sock yarn will do different things for different people.

For yarns like Emily, or sportsweights like n's merino, you will get what the pattern says - 195 sts and eight border rows on 5mm needles.

With a true fingering weight, like Yarn Yard Bonny, or Fyberspates, I drop to 4.5mm needles. You'll get three, four or even five extra pattern repeats depending on the yarn and your tension.

I hope this doesn't sound too muddled - it's just what I have found while knitting. Others may have found things different to me.
paula

I'm in, just off to sort yarn, got some seasilk but that's otn for my montego bay, also got laceweight and sock yarn so not sure what to use yet.
minniemoll

I've made two, the first had three extra pattern repeats and used just under 400m of 4ply merino (there were about 5m left!), the second was in sea silk and used about 280m with two extra pattern repeats (bit of a guess this one as it was the leftovers from a 150g skein used for my Montego Bay scarf).

I've seen the FCS done in aran weight, and it looked great, I'm almost tempted to join in and do one, but I've just started the Apres Surf hoodie, and that'll probably be enough lace for me for the time being  Laughing  I did do a Luna Moth shawl in aran weight, and I use that lots - I wear it in the house in the mornings/evenings to wrap round my shoulders when it's chilly, it's very handy. And cosy.
CJ

I've also made two, and you might want to think about extra repeats, cos as per the pattern it barely wraps round my shoulders and I'm not the biggest person!!   Laughing
Aknita

I have made *ahem* sixteen FCS's Embarassed  I didn't realise it was so many, I had given up counting Laughing They have all, bar two, been gifted or auctioned for charity.

I have used a variety of yarns:-

Posh Yarn Emily x 2 ( 5mm needles,  no extra pattern repeats )

Yarn Yard Bonny x 3 ( one with 5mm, two with 4.5mm needles, three extra pattern repeats )

Fyberspates Sock Yarn x 1 ( 4.5mm needles, three extra pattern repeats )

Bright Dyes Hand Dyed Sock Yarn x 1 ( 4.5mm needles, three extra pattern repeats )

Dream in Colour Smooshy x 2 ( 5mm needles, three extra pattern repeats )

Colinette Cadenza x 2 ( 5mm needles, three extra pattern repeats )

The Knittery 4ply Sock: Merino Cashmere x 1 ( 5mm needles, two extra pattern repeats )

Posh Yarn Sophia (4 Ply Sock) x 1 ( 5mm needles, three extra pattern repeats )

Fyberspates Silk/Alpaca x 1 ( 4mm needles, three extra pattern repeats )

Violet Green Supersock x 1 ( 4.5mm needles, three extra pattern repeats )

Fiddlesticks Knitting Country Silk x 1 ( 4.5mm needles, four extra pattern repeats )

So you can see, you can knit them with anything Very Happy I have learned such a lot about yarns and needles and the way yarns behave while making all of these.

They are all either on Ravelry, or on my blog, if you need more info to help. There are also several KALS on Ravelry.

Anyway, I cast one on last night. I am using Posh Yarn Lei which is a Silk, Bamboo and  Merino mixture. My skein, when wound, weighed 84g, but my new ( and digitlal I might add ) scales are not the most accurate in the world. I am using 4.5mm needles. I just thought as we had started a KAL someone ought to start knitting one.

I am not going to pretend to be an expert by any means, but I love this pattern and if I can help anyone in any way I will be more than delighted to.

Am off to knit a couple more repeats, and I'll be back with a photo.

edited to amend spelling, and to add a FCS to the list!
Glynis

Can I add that the largest ones I have made were from shetland sock wool. I guess the yardage is particularly good with shetland wool.
KnittingLadybird

oooh i've just dug out my rainbow one....it's a bit in yer face. I try and get a photo (yeah err photos wot ar dey den?)

I've used dk and laceweight too for this pattern and it just works. Like Joy, it's a favourite of mine too. Very Happy
knittingnanny

I'm going to sit out of this KAL - I hope no-one minds, but I'm more into wraps / stoles than triangular, but will watch your progress with interest.

A bit off topic here, - minnemoll - how much Aran did you use for the Luna Moth?  That may be a good idea for a "C" word gift.  (From stash)
You know that holiday in December?  June is still too early to think about that though!!

Thanks for all that info Joy!!!! VERY helpful!!

Would you use 5mm then for YY Lochan (merino/tencel)? Or YY Hug (merino)? And would they be big or small? I have one you made me which is made in YY Bonny - which is lovely Cool - would they be about the same size as that or bigger?

Sorry so many questions Confused

ooh, I've yarn set aside to make one of these for me - some Cherry Tree Hill Supersock in Caribou Creek  Very Happy  The FCS I made earlier in the year was for my Mum.  But I won't be able to join in for a few weeks - existing commitments and a holiday  Rolling Eyes

The one I made you was the YY Bonny with 5mm needles Ali - I have dropped to a 4.5mm for Bonny since then.

Hug has less meterage than Bonny, it's more of a sportsweight than a fingering yarn I would say, and I would use 5mm for that and not anticipate extra pattern repeats.

With Lochan ( cos I haven't used it ) I think I'd just have to cast on with 4.5mm's and see what I thought. It depends what you're after. I've just checked Ravelry and there's one using 3.5mm needles and Lochan because the knitter wanted a less lacy look.

hth
sandrab

I think I might join in with this one. I've had the pattern for ages and keep meaning to get some yarn so this might just spur me on to do it finally.  Must go and look for some yarn now!!!
Glynis

Joy wrote I've just checked Ravelry and there's one using 3.5mm needles and Lochan because the knitter wanted a less lacy look.

I have used 4mm needles with YY Bonny and I quite like the way it looks.
I've tried 4.5 with other yarns, but I've not tried 5mm.
CJ

I've used 5mm needles for both my FCS - one was sea wool and the other was posh yarn lucia.  Both looked nice, well I think so.   Laughing
Glynis

I think that's the beauty of this pattern, it looks lovely in all sorts of yarns and guages. Smile

Thanks for all that help Joy and everybody Razz I won't be casting on just yet - maybe in a couple of weeks.

I shall follow with interest but i shan't join in this go-round, i have way too many other patterns i want to try before i knit another Wink

I love looking at them all though, each one is so unique love5

hmmm, I looked at all 794 FCS on ravelry this morning and couldn't find one made from STR Seduction, it's a merino/tencel yarn with 400yds to 4oz, any one who has made this before - what size needles would you recommend and would .5 of a mm make too much difference any way?

well I just the use the needle that makes the the fabric I like, so I would say no and I have used a 5.5mm before on 4ply (ok by mistake but non the less Laughing) it looked lovely too. I think I would err on the side of caution and do more than the said repeats (maybe one less even...see how it goes) and if you go up a needle size and then block it to it's death...you would get a decent size. All in all it's prference to hole size v closeness of the knit.
If you do run out before the cast off, you could keep in mind a contrast colour...Very Happy

Like Linz says, whatever needle size works for you. Honestly. There are no rules!

And in a couple of weeks yours will be the first on Ravelry knitted using STR Seduction  Laughing
Binty

Now I could be tempted with an aran one  Rolling Eyes  what size needles do you think I would need for that?
cazzie

I love the DK weight Swallowtail knitted by Brooklyn Tweed .

Think a FC in heavier weight will look great Very Happy

Binty how about a 5 or 5.5mm needle?

craftylady wrote:

You'll be dreaming about FCS now. Laughing   and I bet that took a while too - addictive though isn't it and don't they look different in different yarns.
craftylady

I must admit modelwidow to becoming a little glazed after a while.  They were all beautiful though.
I ordered my needles this morning and in true indecisive style I ordered both a 4.5 and a 5.5 as they didn't have a 5mm on offer at GK.  I doubt I'll actually get a chance this weekend to wind my yarn into a cake but once I'm armed with all my bits n pieces I'll cast on.  It's been a while since I've had the keen urge to pick up some knitting so I'm looking forward to getting my feet wet again so to speak.
craftylady

Oh no, just opened my email to find GK have no 4.5 Addi turbo's in stock Shocked  suppose that means I'll just have to like the 5.5 tension square Crying or Very sad

Any "experts" got a view on this?
KnittingLadybird

CL you can use straights you know, I do and I think Joy does too Very Happy
craftylady

OH no I didn't know that.  Maybe it's not such a disaster after all then.  Thanks KLB :grins:
minniemoll

You could use Knitpicks needles instead - GK sell the tips and the cords separately, I think they're still cheaper than Addis. I'm using the Harmonies for my hoodie and loving them.

Or you can use straights - I did all but the cast off row for my FCS on 12" Aero straights, there were a lot of stitches, but they just about crammed on. I had to change to a 15" needle for the cast off though, as you increase on the row before by quite a few stitches.

Linz is quite right, I always use straight needles. I can't get on with lace knitting and circulars, I find it very hard to keep a stitch count and end up swearing at my knitting.

There really are no rules with this pattern - needles, yarn, number of pattern repeats, it's all up to you and what you choose.
Glynis

I've just finished making a leaf-lace shoulder shawl using a pattern from Evelyn Clark's "Knitting Lace Triangles".  It is very very similar to the FSC, though the leaves are a little larger. I used a 100g skein of Natural Dye Studio BFL Dazzle sock yarn and a size 4 circular needle 100cm long.
It might make it into June Jamming if I get it blocked Smile
craftylady

You know ladies, there certain days of the month when I'm really stupid.  This must be one of them.  As per previous posts in this thread I suggested a 60cm sub in Addi for the 80cm in a 4.5mm to GK,  I had an email tonight to say they don't have that size either but I could try a Knitpicks (almost echoing minniemolls post).  I looked on their website and they don't have anything above a 3.25mm in any of the Knitpicks circulars.  I wish they'd either send me what I want or just make an informed substitute and hope I like it because all these options are driving me insane. Aaaargggh who said knitting was stress relief?
cazzie

Have you looked on the SKD  site - they had some circs that are v.similiar to Addis - havent checked mysself yet

ETA: Might be worth an e-mail to see what they have in stock Smile

KP only make fixed circulars up to 3.25mm, after that you need to buy a pair of tips and a cord from the interchangeable set - the tips are about £3 and the cords are 99p. I'm using the 3.5mm Harmony tips and a 60cm cord for my lace hoodie, and they're lovely to knit with (the cord isn't actually 60cm, but it makes a 60cm needle when the tips are attached).
Glynis

I noticed www.yarnsmith.co.uk had a range of Addi Turbos on their site.

Thanks Helen, I did reply to the email to say that if they could supply a KP at or around the same price thne to go ahead.  I expect I'll have to wait till Monday for any response.

Think I might be joining you all on this KAL, hoping to get the yarn at woolfest. I made 2 last year, one for a friends baby and the other for me using sock yarn and wear it loads,
I want a pinky purple one so will see what there is next week.

Welcome aboard Nevisknitter.  I promise I will get started soon!

Well I wont be starting until I get back from woolfest, providing I see yarn I like there.

What length straights do you use Joy? I think I might do mine on those as I'm not comfortable yet with doing everything on circs, I tend to chop and change like the weather however I'm finding it difficult to get the extra long needles, I have one pair so far and I think they're 4mm.

I was just doing the post above when yours flashed up on screen Glynis and with a close up too, wonderfull!  I thought it looked a little similar to the FC shawl which is why I asked (my eyesight is not so good and my glasses were upstairs, just too lazy to go get them today  Rolling Eyes )

Now then Glynis, am I going mad, or did you  have a piccy of the whole shawl up and I'm sure it didn't mention the FC shawl orignially?   Laughing

...and if I don't get a move on Joy will have finished another FC before I've even started *lol*

I'm a bit stumped on the qty though, I know quite a few people have mentioned that one skein was enough but  I can't fathom the yardage needed with the skeins I've got in my stash, I'll have to sit down tonight and convert to metres, I've got 4ply sock yarn, Posh Eva DK and silk laceweight although I've not knitted with  that as yet so I' don't know which to use.
Glynis

Paula Laughing  Yes, I posted a picture of the whole shawl in June Jamming.

4ply sock yarn with 25% nylon tends to be in excess of 400 yards and is plenty for the FCS on size 4mm needles

Paula, I usually start with 10" and transfer to 14" when the stitch number gets unmanageable on 10"

The needles I am using at the moment are Aero needles and are a UK size 7  Very Happy

I have just finished the first extra pattern repeat - I think I will have enough yarn for three extra repeats. I have spent in excess of five hours on trains today which has meant a lot of knitting  Laughing

Glynis, your shawl is beautiful Very Happy
craftylady

I've changed my mind on using the STR.  I chickened out in case I didn't have enough yardage so I used some CTH merino (that I had 2 skeins of in my stash) in a burgundy colour non variegated.  My dilemma now is I needed a 3.5mm needle to get the fabric I liked but this is obviously going to be smaller than the pattern.  How do I know when to stop the repeats so that it isn't too big once I've blocked it?
KnittingLadybird

can't you just pin it out to the desired size when you think you're almost there? The edging part then shouldn't make it too big. Dunno if this actually helps but can you really have shawl that's too big Wink
Glynis

What yardage will you have with the two skeins CL ?
craftylady

Glynis wrote:

 820 yards.  I know I won't need much of a second skein if any at all.  I'm at the 195st stage of the pattern now and I've still got about half of the first skein left.
Glynis

I would guess that you could use all of one skein for as many repeats as it will do and then when that is gone you could move towards doing the border with the second skein. That should make a decent shoulder shawl size, but  you could keep going and do a proper shawl size Smile
craftylady

Thanks Glynis.  That sounds about like what I had thought but this being my first FCS I wanted to hear it from "someone who knew"!!!
Aknita

if it helps, I always find my FCS's grow by around a third again in size when blocked.

I have one which blocked while I was away - photos tomorrow.

Joy, thats another stunning shawl. I got the yarn for mine, had a root in stash and came across a ball of Tofutsies in purples and pinks so I am going to use that, should make a good summer shawl. Got to finish the clue for this weeks Goddess Mystery shawl then I will cast on.

My FCS and I fell out last night!  I must have had intravenous diazepam or something cos I just looked back admiringly at my work - like you do! when I saw something amiss.  Somebody had somehow stolen my yarn overs on a left side of one of the diamonds Shocked and I sat and tinked 14 rows!!!!!  There was no screaming, throwing or nashing of teeth just an "oh well" of acceptance.

I'll have to ask DD1 if she put something in my tea!

I even feel like picking it up this morning and knitting forwards rather than the other way!
KnittingLadybird

Still sniggering at the sock faux pas Wink
craftylady

I cast off my FCS over the weekend (I know today's Thursday but I've a time theif operating in my life at the moment) and guess what? It's still sat in the unlovely lump that is a pre-blocked lace item.  I did 5 extra repeats and 10 border rows and had a miniscule amount of yarn left over out of 1 skein.  It's not looking good for blocking this weekend but IF I get it pinned I'll try a picture.

Daren't say I'm pleased with the finished object incase blocking reveals a gaping mistake I've not seen during the process.  I did however find the pattern easy to memorise and an "easy" knit.  I can see why Joy's the queen of the FCS and I'm sure I'll be making more.
craftylady

I've been bad this weekend and instead of catching up with the house I've blocked my fcs.  As promised a picture

(made the link clickable but the picture doesn't seem to be all that much bigger!)

There is a mistake on the right hand side as you look at it about five diamonds up, you see I boobed and obviously botched the repair. *oops - thought I'd got them all*  I still love it though and will likely make another one some time in the future.  I used Cherry Tree Hill Super sock but can't remember the shade. Sorry

I'm using Brigantia Luxury Double Knit in Maywine on 5mm needles. I have no idea how the edging works out, I just cannot see it at all. I may be back for advice when I get that far!

Anna, if you remember that the garter stitches you started with will be at the centre of the top edge, and all the extra stitches that are building on your needle represent the other two sides, along which the border is knitted, you will begin to make sense of it.

How much yarn do you have?

I'm hoping so! I have 2 skeins of the yarn, so 408m, which I think is more than enough. I want to do an extra repeat or two to make it bigger.

Anna what a gorgeous colour!!! it's looking great. I think you will have enough.

I've just found my rainbow FCS...I'm going to post a pic but you may want to wear sunglasses.

I've read all the way through this Forest Canopy thread and there's some gorgeous work  love4 - I've been wondering what to do with my freebie skein from Yarn Forward and wonder if it would be suitable for this?  I'm wondering what needle size to use and how many repeats to do, and how the hell am I going to understand the Forest Canopy pattern!  First time nerves, never made holes before!  Laughing

The yarn is a kind of bright pea/limey green colour, 2 ply, but not really my taste - I guess I could dye it like I think Aknita did?  (sorry if I've got the wrong name!)

Any advise please, thanks x

I've done a laceweight one on 3mm needles ... I'll go find a pic .

here it is...this pattern just works with any yarn and all you have to do is play around with needle size till it looks how you like it.
Anna

I've started my FCS (at long last)  and decided to use the Yarn Addict Merino Sock yarn, in Marshmallow first, if this one goes well, I'll use the Fruit Salad to do another one next.

Anna, if the thinness is putting you off then you could always knit it with the yarn doubled up. The yarn forward laceweight is quite a fine laceweight.
