Elizabeth Chadwick

Just finished The Marsh King's Daughter and I read the last 140 pages in a rush last night - I just couldn't put it down Cool . Very very evocative and a really tense ending. Set in the early C12th it is beautifully written and historically accurate. This is the second of hers I've read - the first was The Winter Mantle which is set just after the Norman Conquest and brilliant too!! If you like a historical novel with a bit of romance give them a try Wink

Just had a peek at this on Amazon, it sounds really good Ali, so thanks for the recommendation Very Happy

I have just bought "London" by Edward Rutherfurd which is about 100o pages long and spans 2000 years of history apparently! - I could be a while.................. Cool

I got that in the library sale a while ago Jo but haven't read it yet - It's MASSIVE!!! Laughing
Anna

I keep looking at The Marsh King's Daughter in my library Laughing but I haven't got it out yet. I have read Daughters of the Grail and Shadows and Strongholds by Elizabeth Chadwick, both of which were very enjoyable.

I've also read quite a few Edward Rutherford, with mixed feelings. London I really enjoyed, and I loved all the surnames. Why can't people have interesting surnames like that now? They're all so boring, unless they're exotic Eastern European ones Laughing Sarum is another good one, set in Salisbury. The Forest (about the New Forest) was patchy, as was Russka (I was disappointed in this, as I have a thing about Russia and so wanted it to be as good as some of the others) and I've only read the first part of the one about Dublin and was thoroughly bored by halfway through.

Well, that's my opinion. Enjoy London, Jobo and don't be put off by the size.

I keep looking at these Elizabeth Chadwick books and I will definitely read one soon - problem is there are so many I don't know where to start!

Which one is the best does anyone think?

I think the later they are the better - those two I read are sort of reasonably late but not the newest Cool . I really loved both. Am thinking of reading The Conquest next.
