CTNY Summer Spinning: JuneEveryone is welcome to join us, no matter how lumpy and bumpy the yarn is. The challenge runs from June to August, and in the end there will be some fiber prizes from my stash. Anni has kindly offered to donate a prize as well, so we'll have three winners.
Spinning takes time, so in the end of challenge three names will be drawn instead of drawing one each month. Everyone who spins one yarn during the challenge will have a chance to win.
Have fun!

Ooh I must try and join in with this - I have a spindle at the moment - but hopefully I will be getting a wheel in June - can't wait!

I'm almost finished spinning this , I think I'll need a hour to finish singles and then I'll navajo ply it. I was too lazy to divide the top before I started this project so it's only option, and navajo plying is really quite easy after I understood how it works.
I haven't decided what I'll spin next. I don't really plan my spinning, I just pick the colors I like at the moment.

Oooh yes I'd forgotten about this Hanne!! I really want to do this - it might start me practising with my wheel.

I'm definately in. Just waiting for my new flyer to dry - I varnished it yesterday - then fix up the scotch tension, and I should be off.
I can't decide which of my lovely fibres to spin first though, too much choice now. And my yarn will definately be the "designer" sort.

Well, I'm not sure this will end up as proper finished yarn - I'm just practising really. Started this yesterday - don't know what the yarn is - got it off the wingham wool stand at woolfest last year - I liked the colours. It seems quite easy to draft. My spinning is still quite uneven. I might manage enough of this to have a go at plying - haven't done that yet. It's a bit 'fluffy' - not sure if that's me doing something wrong or if it just 'IS'!?

Blimey is that your first go Sharon?? It's gorgeous

yeah, it looks lovely Sharon. I'm really rubbish with a spindle, cos I am so not co-ordinated enough!!

Not my first go but I haven't really made any yarn yet - just had a bit of a go with some pencil roving - but I was getting frustrated with that. This has gone much quicker.

I think it's the fiber. Fibers which have longer staple length are also coarser than merino and they look fluffy - take a look at this.
It's Ashland Masham I tried to spin a while ago. I found it harder to draft than merino because I haven't spun long wools.

That's interesting Hanne. I wish I could remember what fibre it is!
|
CJ

one of the yarns I spun was quite fluffy. I've no idea what it was, as it was a surprise present from a ravelry friend in the states. and the fleece I was spinning on my first couple of goes was Llyn and that was more fluffy - though I thought it was me - LOL.

Wow, CJ, love your yarns, especially the last one. Gorgeous. I've not spun much lately, been too busy deadline knitting. Got several new designsin the pipeline wiht deadlines at end of June or July. Will try to do some spinning tonight.
Still working on some fibre from DragonFibre on Etsy. got 200gr of same colour.
Here's some on the bobbin, which is full now but I'm trying to squeeze 100gr on each bobbin and the first 100gr isnearly done.
and here the fibre is draped over the wheel.
Want to actually knit with this when it's done. Thinking of doing a shawl or perhaps a shrug if I have enough. Think it'll turn otu about 4ply ish weight, maybe dk.
Not knitted wiht much of my handspun yet. knitted a hat iwth some a while back but didn't swatch or check size as I was knitting and it's too big. Started knitting a cowl with the April YY fibre (think it was April - the green and pink one) then had to frog it and it ended up a tangled mess. Not had the energy to untangle it.

thanks Anni. I love the dragon fibre you're spinning so far - and is that a traveller I see?

I finally finished my June spinning!
225 metres, 2 ply merino tencell from N's fibre club.
The plying helped hide the inconsistencies and at the beginning I hadn't put enough twist in and it kept breaking during plying.
I was pleased to get the amount I did though and its a fingering weight!

Fab lin. Is that the May club fibre? I wasn't too keen on the colourway but that looks gorgeous. Fantatic spinning. So even.
I've finshed the first 100gr of the Dragon Fiber BFL and got it all on one bobbin. Started the 2nd 100gr.

how did you manage that, I never seem to get a full 100g on my ashford bobbins?

Oops - posted this already but I want to join in the summer fun too!
The dark brown skein at the front is all mine - OH spun some of the other 2
It's BFL 'humbug' - I've gota bout 100g - no idea what yardage - I need to measure a 'round' of my niddy noddy It's quite thick and thin in places (yarn, not niddy noddy!).
|
CJ

I love the look of the humbug, must get some soon.
OK, here's my next June effort.

Hanne
|
It's lovely to see everyone's yarns!
I've finally finished my May project and moved on to something bright. The weather here is awful, it's raining every day I wanted to spin something which would remind me of sunshine, so I chose this
It's superwash merino from Spincerely. Originally I wanted to try laceweight, but I think the colors deserve something thicker, maybe a pair of mittens!

And I haven't spun a blooming thing... to busy dyeing it for people like you

I hope you get a weekend off N??
You work very hard.
But look at you yarns and fibres, we love them!

Normally I don't dye or post at the weekend. I used to but I really had to take myself in hand and stop or it would be a 365 day job.
But in one week's time I will have just finished Day One of Woolfest, and we will be driving down next Thursday, so I have Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues to dye.
There are 6kg secret Club fibre to dye, 4kg assorted TdeFleece and Tdefrance KAL yarns and fibre to do(and post), 4kg BFL and a kilo of merino... and some Merino tencel if I can squeeze it in.... and then there are 5kg merino yarn, 3kg laceweight, 4kg Lochan 3kg Caber, 5kg Bonny (and another New Yarn coming on Monday) to dye.... before Tuesday night.
I'm a little stressed.

PS The printer just ran out of ink...

OK, this one might make it into June, not sure yet as there's a lot of it, and it's my first attempt at laceweight.
This is the lurid pink shetland that DD helped me dye.

First time I've managed to squeeze thatm uch on to a bobbin and I was surprised I managed it. Still not made a proper start on the 2nd bobbin. Been too busy deadline knitting but one of my projects ahve just come off the needles. I'm out tonight but tomorrow evening I may make it a spinning night. Got yarns to dye now.
Your latest yarn is gorgeous CJ. Love the colours. And yes I've got an Ashford Traveller. Bought it secondhand from a local lady. Love it but not keen on the dark wood finish but as it wsa secondhand not too fussed and it looks good in the lounge.
Sprite, gorgeous Humbug. Got some of that too. Think I bought about 250gr and think I've spun and plied half of it. Got a couple of half done lots. Got 200 gr of some Yarn Yard Fibre. Got 100gr from Joy in the last SEcret Santa (I think) and spun and plied that and then saw another 100gr on n's website and ordered that too in the same colour so still got that to spin. Think I should have one spinning evening a week.
|
CJ
|
Anni, thanks. And spurred on by you fitting the 100g on each bobbin, I managed it for my wildcraft lichens BFL. It's all finished and dry now, so another June effort for me.

wow, you're on a roll aren't you CJ. More gorgeous yarn. do you do any knitting these days (or housework, cooking, etc. )?
Seriously, I'm very impressed with yoru yarn CJ, it's seriously yummy. I'm hjoping to finsih my BFL tonight. Watching a film at 9pm and planning to spin then. Not got much to do to fill up the 2nd bobbin so hoping I may even manage some plying tonight.
Did you guys know there is a Online Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers? I joined a few motnsh ago but only looked on the Yahoo group once or twice. They have monthly challenges and online workshops etc. Can't find the link now but put Online Guild into google and it shoudl come up. That's how I found them afteer a lady at a local spinnign group told me about it.

Ewe Give Me The Knits merino top, color Swamp Buggy 1
85g, 247 m, 11 wpi.
Spun on Lucrezia, 14:1, navajo plied.
This is my first yarn for June. The second is still drying in the bathroom, hopefully I can post pics tomorrow. I have more details & pictures on this one on my blog if someone is interested.

Hanne, that's gorgeous. I just love those colours.
Thanks Anni. Cooking/housework, what is that!!!???

Thank you, Glynis and CJ. I'm quite happy with Swamp Buggy, it turned out finely in the end although spinning is was quite difficult because I had some problems with my wheel.
This is my official June yarn, started and finished during the month.
Superwash merino 64 ct lambswool top from Spincerely.
Color Juno. 199m, 117g.
Spun on Lucrezia, 10:1, 2ply. 10 wpi.
As always, more pictures on my blog. I've also written a webpage where I can post pictures of the fiber and finished yarn side by side, I think it's always interesting to see how different the two look like.

Some lovely yarns! I was hoping to get my cabbage BFL finished for this month but I'm going to struggle now I think. I might do a bit of spinning this evening - OH's brother & wife have just gone and at least the house is nice and tidy as we'd had a mad cleaning session before they arrived on Saturday - so nothing much else to do tonight. If by some miracle I can finish spinning my 2nd bobbin tonight I might be able to ply tomorrow evening.

Gorgeous yarns Hanne and Janice.
I finally finsihed plying my June yarn this morning. I've got 120 gr in total and it took 2 1/2 bobbins once plyed.
Here it is before finishing.
Th 2nd skein came off the wheel an hour ago and it's been soaked and bashed about etc and is drying outside now so if it's dry by the end of the day and I get time I'll post some more pics then.
Now I've got to decide what to spin next. I can either finsih of the BFL Humbug, not very much left to spin.
Or do the 2nd 100gr of this Yarn yard BFL, I got the first skein in the Secret Spring Santa (at least I think that's what it was my memory is useless).
Or therei s the choice of the June offering from teh Dragon Fibre club (the blue and white) which is merion/bamboo (I've spun Emma's merino/bamboo before and it's gorgeosu), or the June or July offerings of the Yarn Yard. On the left is the June offering which is merino/tencel and I'm not too keen on the colours but have seen it spun up and it looked much better. Or the one on teh right which is Wensleydale which I'ven ot spun before and I'm keen to try it and I love the colours.
Help me decide please.

ooo, nice stuff Hanne.
go for this month's yarn yard, cos I want to see how it spins up.

Finally dry,
Colours are a bit off. I'm happy wiht most of the spinning, but it's a little under plyed in places. 220 gr in total and it's a heavy 4ply. Might try to do a shrug with it. Working on one now and if it works out I may do it again in this yarn.
Now trying to decide on what to spin for July. Found another merinobamboo mix from Dragon Fiber this morning which I think I may go for first then the YY Wensleydale afterwards. Target is to spin two lots for July.
|
CJ

that looks great Anni.
I've finished spinning my lace weight - phew that took forever. I'll ply it tonight and tomorrow I think, as it will take a few sessions I think.
But as I can't ply during the day, I've started a new bobbin of some very gorgeous spunky eclectic corriedale/alpaca.
although we're into July now aren't we.

Looking great CJ! I just managed to finish my 2nd bobbin of 'cabbage' BFL - will hopefully ply tomorrow evening. Can't decide what to spin next. The baby camel is calling to me!

thanks.
ooo, camel, lucky you, I've not got any of that - yet ..... I've plied a bobbin full and am washing my pink shetland at the moment. Already got yardage of 325m, and not even half way through it yet.

The baby camel is SO soft. I'm hoping I can get a laceweight from it to make a lacy scarf - I've got 200g of it.

that's gorgeous CJ. I've got some camel to spin too. Not attempted it yet though. A bit worried I'm not experienced enough to do it justice. it was quie expensive so want ot make sure I do it properly. Did try to card it with some silk a couple of months ago but didn't like it.
I've started on some Dragon Fiber Merino/Bamboo I found in a box in my studio yesterday while looking for somethign else. Teh colours are gorgeous.
and here is what I spun last night. Was out most of the evening so only spun a little bit before going to bed.
