Colour help if you have five minutes to spare?

So, i really want to make the Clamshell Wrap (Rav link, sorry) that i bought the pattern for at Ally Pally 2007, i only have the pattern not the kit so i thought i'd use some of my Yarn Yard stash up to make it. However, as they are all variegated or self-striping there are a lot of colours involved. I only have one skein of each colour and will need about 5 skeins to make a decent sized wrap. That's a lot of colours and although i do usually look like clown vomit i don't want the wrap to look like it! Laughing

So, i've been photographing Wink
First up is my entire Yarn Yard stash

Followed by several different colour schemes that might] work...

There is one that i am leaning towards a bit more than the others, but if anyone has any ideas or comments i would LOVE to hear them, seriously, i'm not all that good with colour so any pointers would be lovely! Wink

Aknita

I rather think I like the middle one best, and the one above it too which is very similar.

edited to say - ok, there are 6 photos, not 5  Rolling Eyes

I like the fourth one down best, followed by the one above.

Thankyou Joy Wink x

I don't want to say too much as i don't want to influence anyone, is that daft? Confused
lindyloop

LOL! You don't look like clown vomit!

Anyway,
I think the 2nd and 3rd are great, and I like the last one.
It depends whether you want the colours to blend or contrast really.

I don't like 1 and 4, but thats me trying to hide in my neutral colours again!!

Very Happy

Love the pattern,

Laughing thanks Lin x

Usually my hands, head and neck wear don't co-ordinate at all, they're just a free-for-all of colour but i am gradually getting there, i have a scarf and hat that both have the same colour green in them which is a start Wink Laughing

Thanks for your thoughts. To be honest i really don't know if i want it to blend or contrast... i keep changing my mind! Embarassed
I think i just want it to look... well... nice!! Embarassed
Glynis

My immediate thought is that the triangles are each quite small, so to get a sense of integrity about each "row" of them you may want to look at skeins that have very short lengths of similar colours, or separate a row of brighter "long length" by rows of more muted "short length" so that colours and patterns do not fight each other for the eye's attention.
Glynis

Actually I quite like the idea of using the muddy green/browns set against that brighter yellow/green, but of course my monitor may just not be showing me a true picture of the colours. Laughing
FatCat

Ooh, pretty pattern!

I might be being dense here, but aren't they exactly the same yarns in the second and third pictures?   Confused  Ah, am I supposed to be looking at the order they're in as well as the colours together?   Two (and 3) are my top choices, I'd use those if I was making it for me.  And then 5.  One and 4 are not what I'd choose for me, but I do like how they go together.  I think they'd all look great on you!  I'm not much help, sorry  Laughing

If you really can't choose then I'd say to tear a piece of paper into 5, number each bit from 1 to 5 and then pick one out of a hat  Mr. Green
Wildpurl

I like colourscheme two.  I also think that I would take the first 6 skeins in the overall picture (from top left) and they would look really lovely together - but then that's just my taste
pictish

I go for 2 or 3 tho like FC I thought they were the same Laughing
malteser

I like 1, 2 and 3, though I prefer 3 to 2.
GrannySmith

I have a couple of these skeins (diferent colours, like you just one skein of each colour) and maybe other people do to, how about doing some swaps so that you get more of the same colour?

Just a thought   Very Happy
melody yarns

Are you any good at dyeing stuff missus? I'm not, but I have a full 500g cone of Falkland Island 4ply in cream if you want to have a go at it and make up your own colourway?? Maybe you could run off section sized skeins and dye them  in differing shades of the same colour iyswim, getting lighter and more diluted ?

Other than that, I go for colour scheme 1  Very Happy
Blossom

I'm another for 2 or 3! Smile
KnittingLadybird

I like this and the other one that's similar.
It seems to be a popular choice....and no I didn't read all the posts...Wink
angieknitsagain

Option 2 for me ... but that's because those are the colours I like (so maybe not too unbiased!)

Well, i did half think of that this afternoon but then that puts me in another quandry as i don't think i can part with any of them Embarassed
I do really love my YY stash, i know it's sad of me but there isn't one colour scheme that i have that i don't Sad
Deb, thankyou, that's a lovely thought but i really wanted to use my YY, it's silly to keep it all shut away in a box Embarassed

That would be colourscheme 1, more or less but the other skeins i added bring the overall colour down whereas the solid bright pink really lifts it

Thankyou so much to everyone for your input, i was actually leaning toward 5 for quite a while but i think i am going to swatch with 2 and 3 and see how they go Confused I like the grey theme running through 3 and i think that'll help it go better with my clothes and therefore get worn more Wink

Oh, the difference between them is that one has 4 colours and the other has 5 Wink

Franney I think you should go with the one that's calling to you Cool despite what we like Laughing

There'll be too much pink in it for me to wear it very often though i think Confused

I'll see how the swatching goes next week, knowing me i'll end up doing it in something completely different!! Laughing
daisydap

i am thinking the 2nd and 3rd combos would work best
YarnAddict

I can't decide which one I like best. Very helpful aren't I?!!

Have you got enough of one colour family to do the shawl? Like enough blues forexample?

Gorgeous stash. Very Happy

Everyone is helpful, whether they realise it or not Wink
I only have the YY that you can see in the very first photo and i want this wrap to be in all YY, i' have liked it to be in Club yarns but that might not be possible so i'm extending it to include the ones i have bought too Wink
I'm going to start balling up the skeins tonight i think, and i need to see what size needle to use too, i'm hoping a 4mm will be about right as that's the size of the new needle i bought yesterday Very Happy
franney

I've started swatching!! Only two clams done so far but it's a start Very Happy

I shall spend the afternoon winding the rest of the skeins into cakes and then settle down for a session of swatching this evening Very Happy
Glynis

Any pictures yet Franney?
franney

Actually, yes, i just took a couple of the swatches so far, having some trouble with that first one though, it just looks really grey in all the photos but it's actually a really nice mix of grey, blue and green Confused

This is the blue/grey/green in close up Wink

I have at least another 6 swatches to do Very Happy
Glynis

They all look wonderful!
I'm full of admiration for your dedication to planning Smile
Aknita

I'd be joining all those swatches for a blankie Wink
franney

Aknita wrote:

Nooooooooo!! they'll be joined eventually into the wrap, if i use them, i made sure i left long enough tails that i can frog and reknit if i need to Wink

I've already decided that i'm not going with colourscheme 2, the colours look totally different when knitted up, actually, even in yarncakes they look different to the skeins. I'm almost back to square one when it comes to colours really Laughing

that's the five swatches on the top row, totally different!
KnittingLadybird

lovely colours...aren't you lil miss organised Wink. If you don't make a blankie, you could turn them into a scarf... Cool

I am being organised, it's most unlike me!! Laughing
I';m enjoying the challenge though, and i am amazed how much i like colours that i didn't think i was that keen on Laughing
pictish

They all look so lovely franney!!!
franney

Thanks Ali x
franney

Well, that's all the swatching done at last!
I'm just writing up a blog post as there a lot of pictures and it's easier to blog them and link to that than it is to write out a forum post as well Wink
The link will take you to the "first post" then just click on newer post at the bottom to take yout hrough the four colour schemes i have documented so far Very Happy

I'm having lots of fun with this project, hopefully i will be done with the planning some time this year and then i can get knitting!! Laughing
