Chevron Lace Cardie CAL

I'm a noob crochet-er... I did go the course at Aileen's in Stockport with Murdo and she went on to do great things, err, unlike me  Embarassed

I can do a chain and I can do all the stitches but it doesn't seem right to me somehow and I prefer knitting....

BUT!!

I saw this on Rav and I really love it!

Chevron lace cardie

So, all you seasoned crochet-ers out there! Do you think I'd stand even a *small* chance of doing it if I put my mind to it? I'd be prepared to have a bash at least??
Nevisknitter

i have this pattern queued, do you fancy a CAL? not looked at it yet to see how hard it is, I can crochet blocks, hats and granny squares though.

Go for it  - I would be up for a CAL - we could all support each other then
KnittingLadybird

ooooh I think  I could join in on this one too...I really would like to crochet an actual garment Very Happy
melody yarns

Well I can't even manage a simple link!! I'll edit the first post so it's clickable  Wink

Oooh a CAL sounds good but I'm likely to be WAY slow!! But I could do with the encouragement, so it sounds like a fab idea!
melody yarns

Link edited!  Wink

I will edit the title of this thread to reflect the CAL and then we can keep all the info in on place.

Consider this the start then, ladies and gents!
KnittingLadybird

well i'm not sure i'll be any quicker Debs Very Happy....but i'm looking forward to running this alongside my knitting.
melody yarns

I just have to find some suitable yarn in stash that's not earmarked for anyfink else knitterly  Wink or that I wouldn't mind making a muck-up of iyswim?
KnittingLadybird

yup I know exactly what you mean....think I may have summat too Wink
failing that...i'm not adverse to cheap acrylic Laughing
Nevisknitter

the biggest problem I have is that my tension is a lot looser with crochet, might have to use 4 ply not DK. I have 4 balls of mexican wave that I might use for this, I was thinking of making sambuca with it anyway.
dreamcatcher

I will be watching with interest - currently my crochet skills extend to a simple edging around a hat but I'm getting much more interested in learning it properly  Very Happy I've bought the first two issues of Inside Crochet as they have some very nice projects in there. There a little shrug/cardi in issue 2 that I would like to have a go at, and the cover top is really nice too.
Annerosemary

I'm the same, have got as far as crochet cushions but I'm tempted, so I'll see how you get on.
daisydap

i will be in this too, taking a crochet course at the moment, so hopefully will have the skill to do it properly. think i am going to have to change the wording though as it is written in american crochet and i just know i will forget otherwise
janice

I love the look of that cardie   Very Happy   The pattern doesn't look tooo bad so I think I will join in the CAL  Very Happy
daisydap

i am totally amazed that i have finished mine already. i have done the smallest size, i know there is more than likely a few mistakes but it does look good. fits DD2 lovely. i didnt do any sleeves on mine as i loved the effect of the little capped sleeves that you got at the chain 10 for underarms.
will get a pic up sometime tomorrow.
craftylady

already Daisydap?  That's really quick, looking forward to the piccie.
franney

That looks nice, i will have a rummage in stash to see if i have enough dk of anything and i'll join you.

As for whether or not you can do it, i don't see why not! Very Happy
daisydap

its really quite an easy pattern, as long as you know how to do a treble crochet and half treble crochet.
melody yarns

I love yours Deb - I've just seen it in the LWIM section - fab!!

Does the yarn need to be pressable? Or will an acrylic mix be okay? I have some navy Country Style I could use to practise with  Confused

Or some pure cotton....

Question
KnittingLadybird

Debs, i'm pretty sure acrylic will be fine (I do tend to use it quite a lot and had no probs so far).
I've found some of this so i'm going to give it a whirl Very Happy
daisydap

the washed haze is a cotton acrylic mix, i think any yarn that has a little bit of a drape to it will do
Nevisknitter

I'm dithering between Elle mexican wave in blues and Kool Kotton in purple.

i've made crochet jumpers with acrylic before, as long as the pattern is open it should be fine.
FatCat

I'd completely missed this until I saw Daisydap's finished one  Shocked  What a lovely pattern!   I'm going to see if I've got anything in stash I can use cos I'd love to join in too  Very Happy
knittingnanny

I like this too - especially now Ive seen one already made IYKWIM

I've never followed a corchet pattern before, but this looks like I might be able to.   There's a GORGEOUS really lacy version in the finished projects page. I'm sure I have regular stash to have a go.

Linda
melody yarns

Well I tried the tension swatch last night and I can do it!! I even achieved tension which is a pure miracle for me and crochet  Cool

I used a 6mm hook and some avocado Kool Kotton from stash. I think the Kool Kotton is a bit splitty for this though as I'm finding a bit hard to find the right loops to crochet through as my crochet skills are not good, iyswim?

I might try with some Patons 100% cotton later on and see how it a) works up and b) if I can achieve tension.

Well with this pattern I can actually follow what to do, although I'm not sure that one stitch is in the right place but it still looks okay! I think yours look stunning Debs and it's seeing yours on here that has inspired me to actually have a go at this - thank you Debs {{hugs}}
FatCat

I was taught to crochet by my grandmother at the same time she taught me to knit so it's almost second nature to me but ... I've never crocheted a garment before, only throws and blankets, so I'm really looking forward to this  Very Happy   More thanks from me - to Melody for finding the pattern and starting the CAL and to Daisydap for posting such a gorgeous FO.  Inspiration from both of you

I've just done a spot of swatching.  I was getting gauge with DK but I didn't like how it looked, really loose and baggy  Confused  So I've just tried again with some bright red Stylecraft aran that I've had knocking about for years  Rolling Eyes  Embarassed and that's coming out really well, on gauge with a 6mm hook.  And it's a good old cheap practice yarn so it won't matter if I completely cock it up. So I think I'm ready to start  Razz
melody yarns

Oooh now I never thought of subbing for aran  Confused that would make a lovely warm winter cardie wouldn't it?

Well the news is that I've been beavering away all day on this  Confused I had the day off to get some cleaning and ironing done and although I've stripped two beds and then washed and dried the associated bed linen on the line outside, very little else has been done today....

I managed to get gauge with Patons 100% cotton DK with a 6mm hook and have already made progress up to row 3 of the pattern. It's looking good so far and I'm REALLY pleased with it. I have had big trouble trying to fathom where all my stitches are, especially in the first row, but I've got there in the end despite reading the pattern wrongly as well and ending up with too few stitches  Laughing
KnittingLadybird

I've started mine Very Happy I'm using up the last of my Evergreen yarn in brown (not entirely summery but what the hey...i'll make another in cotton I guess).
knittingnanny

I hope it's ok to ask this.

I have printed out the pattern, started this as my portable (lunchtime) project, and have come to work without the pattern.

Would it be possible for anyone to email it to me?

If it's not allowed, please tell me, and I'll go shopping at lunchtime instead!!

Thank you

Linda
Nevisknitter

heres the link to the pdf pattern, dont know how much your work block though, I cant access any forums or rav at work,
knittingnanny

You are an angel Hilary  angel7

I can get onto Rav, but not blogs - so that's where I got stuck.
Your link worked, and I'm ready to go at lunchtime - I'm on row 3 already and loving it.

Thank you

Linda
FatCat

I started on mine too, also up to row 3.  I also found that first row tricky, ended up with an extra foundation chain somehow - probably my inability to count  Rolling Eyes - so fudged it a bit at the end.  But it looks OK, no-one would ever notice  Very Happy
KnittingLadybird

Here's my progress so far...I wanted to do sleeves but only have 1 more ball left (I thought I had more brown and less blue...apparently not Wink) but the cap sleeve is quite nice.
Deffo a pattern I will make again...and again probably Laughing
daisydap

its very quick to do isnt it. lloks lovely, modelled shots are appreciated though lol

I tried to do a self portrait but it's still a bit too short to actually make it look good. I'll get on with asap! Laughing

Glad to help Linda, my surfing at work is limited to knitty, amazon and the bbc website.

I will be starting mine afer woolfest, need to buy a 6mm hook too, though usually my guage with crochet is really loose, so might get away with a smaller hook
melody yarns

Oooh it's great that everyone is getting on so well!

Well I got up to starting row 5 last night and couldn't get it to work out properly and sat up until half past midnight trying to sort it out. In the end I frogged the part of row 5 that I'd done and row 4  Shocked

It was only when I looked at the pattern again just before I went to bed that I realised that I'd only worked one treble instead of two on row 4 and my stitchcount was completely out  Shocked

I was at wrok today as well and so I took the cardigan in to do a few  chains over lunch and got row 4 done again. It's worked this time and looks like it fits into the pattern which admittedly it didn't yesterday!!  Laughing  Laughing

When will I ever learn to read a crochet pattern properly??? !!!  Laughing  Laughing
knittingnanny

I did something similar - thought I knew what I was doing , and did all of row 2, except it should have been row 3!!

What I really  like, is that you can frog / tink just by holding a stitch really tight (and NOT letting go) and you are back where you should be. (Polite version  Laughing )

I LURVE this pattern already - and bought 3 X 99p black acrylic for the next one  Shocked  Laughing  Embarassed
FatCat

wow, that's looking great Linz!  And glad everyone else is getting on so well.

I frogged mine last night.  I made a complete mess up somewhere and just looked at it and decided that actually I didn't like the yarn or the colour and I've got too much else on the go anyhow  Rolling Eyes  Embarassed  But I really like the pattern so I might have another go at it at some point when I'm less overwhelmed by everything else.

Very much looking forward to seeing all of yours though  Very Happy
KnittingLadybird

Front bands
Rejoin yarn to bottom of first front, and work in 2 single crochet to each row along front edge,
1DC per stitch around neckline (working 3 stitches into corner stitches) and 2 DC per row
down second front. Repeat until front band is desired width adding buttonholes, or button
loops as required.
Finishing
Weave in loose ends and block

Right now is this wrong or do we actually only do DC (trebles) up one side, around the neck and then only SC (doubles) down the other side??
won't this make one side wider than the other????....i'm thinking of doing trebles all the way round Confused fuddled...it don't take much!
daisydap

i just did double crochet all the way around mine, gives a neater edge than treble crochet i think
janice

Haven't started mine, will have to see if I have a 6mm hook and will start on mine later today, need to do something different, getting fed up with that BdeF sweater, again  Laughing
KnittingLadybird

I've finished mine...it's over in the see what I made forum Very Happy
daisydap

i have made another one, just to do the edging on it then its all done

Laughing  Laughing

i can ne ver just do one of anything if its for the girls, they both have to have something, otherwise there is tears and tantrums
melody yarns

How's everyone doing on this? I did another row yesterday evening only to have to frog it all because I'd made a mistake on the row before (again!) Every row I do I seem to have to rip back.... will I ever make progress??

However I'm really enjoying doing this and I already have one in charcoal DK in mind if I ever finish this one!
Nevisknitter

I have yet to start, need to get a blanket and shawl out of the way first, It will be at least another fortnight before I begin.
franney

I haven't started yet, my Mojo Fairy is on her holidays Wink
melody yarns

I've stopped making silly mistooks for the time being  Confused but my crochet is *so* slow and I've got miles to go before the armhole section . It feels like I'll never get there!
melody yarns

Hurray! There was nothing on the TV last night so I watched a Columbo DVD from my Columbo boxed set and got past dividing for the armhole section. I'm now whizzing down the main part of the body!
melody yarns

This is the progress so far:

up to dividing for the armhole and I've done a few rows on the body part today. Not far to go now!  Very Happy
daisydap

love the colour deb, its looking lovely
janice

Gorgeous colour Debs    Very Happy
melody yarns

Thanks! It's the four balls of Patons Cotton DK left over from the recent Blaze cardie that I did. It's quite difficult to work with as it's got no elasticity at all  Rolling Eyes but I do like the overall effect. I think this is going to be an all time favourite pattern when it's done!
Nevisknitter

I finally started this cardi today, I'm using Mexican wave, and have done the first 3 rows so far. So far the pattern seems pretty straight forward.
melody yarns

I finished this on holiday but have to just weave the ends in and sew the buttons on before it's done completely  Rolling Eyes Maybe I'll do that today so it's finished!

It has been a lovely project and I thoroughly enjoyed working on it - I almost said 'knitting it' then!  Laughing
daisydap

brilliant deb, cant wait to see it
melody yarns

S'in the the Look What I Made section Debs  Wink

I want to crochet another now, like you did! I'm just so impressed with he final thing and I'm SO proud of myself! I wasn't as quick as you though, mine took two months!!!  Laughing  Laughing
KnittingLadybird

I've decided to finish off the 'endless summer' Wink chevron...and i've downsized one in lovely
autumn-y colours for Millie Very Happy....on a roll I guess Laughing
piccies to follow...
melody yarns

yay!! Keep it goin' KLB!
