melody yarns

lol ...do they have different uses

there is long tail and knitted and the figure of eight one

I think that the differance is in the stretchiness and finished appearance......
There is a special lace cast on similar ot eh cable cast on, and its almost invisible when you're finished. Thumb cast on is stretchier than cable cast on................................................
I have the Montse stanley book, and that has loads of differant ones in it.
I know for hats, some use a tubular cast on, although I've never used that myself Confused

Why do you ask my dear?? ARe you wanting one for a particular purpose??

no i was just interested cos when you read patterns sometimes they say a specific cast on and so i was wondering if there were special ones for different things and i knew that between us we could work it out

There are loads! I'm doing a city & guilds handknitting course and you have to do different cast ons and cast offs. I'm trying to 'collect' as many as I can. Haven't done many samples yet though. I did try the 'channel islands' (or 'knotted') cast on recently. That was interesting. It creates a strong edge as you use the yarn doubled and it's also decorative too. I've used a 'twisted german cast on' for socks - mega stretchy. erm....thinking. Tubular cast on.

Ok - consulting my Montse Stanley 'knitters handbook now - great book. It says for lace:
Loop - for softest results
twisted loop
alternate loop
chain
edging (i.e. picot - you knit an edging and then pick up the required number of stitches)

I haven't looked at the book in great detail yet but it seems really good. I got it from the book depository (was cheaper than amazon)

Laughing I'm a bit slow on the typing - you beat me to it, haha.

It is a good book sprite, I use it quite often for techniques which I don't use everyday, like tidy button holes, I use the book for those Laughing

Theres the backward loop cast on too........

I use thumb method for everything as it's the only one I know properly. If I need to add sts mid row or buttonholes, I use the cable cast-on.
