BoudicaManda Scott has written a wonderful 4-part series of books about Boudica. They're fast paced, thrilling and also a fabulous re-rendering of our history. It's good to read about a really strong woman and get her (the author's) take on how society was then. Really fascinating read.
Finished the fourth in the series recently - all four (in order, mind) highly recommended.

Funnily enough I've just started book 3 of these. I loved book 1, book 2 wasn't so good (in my opinion) and book 3 is good so far.

I couldn't get beyond the massacre incident right at the beginning of book 1 - bit too gratuitously gory for me

Fair point Pictish they're gory all the way through. No shortage of battle scenes - not my favourite parts but as I got further into it I gained a weird kind of respect for it. Something to do with the style of fighting being so raw, hand to hand. It's true they're probably not suitable for reading just before a meal though and maybe not to everyone's taste.

I'm just a bit squeamish I think - other people might not be so bothered tbh It was the pregnant woman bit I couldn't get beyond
