Border peopleNo, not those of you who live literally in the Borders but those amongst you who have tackled that most terrifying of lace activities, knitted on borders. As Shoalwater has sunk for the time being, I'm going to knit Print o the Waves http://www.eunnyjang.com/knit/2005/12/print_o_the_wave_stole.html in some very exclusive yarn which I shall reveal at a later date. I've read through the pattern and it all looks straightforward, although I'm going to miss the grafting bit because I actually prefer the pattern all going one way and dont like the join etc. However, I cannot get my head around the knitted on border, even after reading VLT (think I'm even more confused now!). I dont want to knit the easy version which is on the Posh Yarns site, as I love the edging but obviously that means doing the border. Well, I'll have to learn how to do it at some point. Does anyone know of any sites etc which might give an idiot's guide to knitting borders on lace? Or can anyone offer any other enlightenment? Thanks all

Cant you cheat, knit the stole then do the border separate and stitch it on. Ive done this with a DK baby blanket but not sureif it would work with laceweight.

this can be a tough one, to do the border all the way round without any sewing, you will start off with only a border section starting with a provisional cast on. Work as many repeats as you need for width, if your border is mostly garter st then work out how many ridges you have to pick up sts in between for the body of the shawl. once you've done the bottom border, pick up sts along the edge and undo the prov cast on and use these sts as the other side border. Depending on which border pattern you use, you need to reverse the chart or whatever for the left or right hand border. When you get to the top of the shawl, work th border pattern alone along the top edge and knit together the last st of the border with a live st from the body until all the sts from the centre panel are used then graft tog the right hand border sts with the sts left OTN from the top border.
If that makes sense

I think so Catknit although still getting my head round it, maybe its one of those things that clicks into place when you do it (I can but hope!). I dont want to knit the middle bit though and then make a complete mess of the border and ruin the project. And on the other hand, I think its the border that makes this shawl. Hmmmm, more research is needed methinks Thanks all!

I did this Piglottie, it was my first proper lace knitting and all the way through knitting the body I kept trying to understand how the border worked, I couldn't....
I finally got to the border did as it said cast my sts on and worked the first row and suddenly it all made sense and it was easy....
BTW I didn't fancy all the grafting so I did a crochet cast on and worked the stole one way then picked up the stitches and knitted the other half....
the circled bit is my middle...& a close up

LittleBerry you are a lace knitting legend and a lifesaver I'm glad I'm not the only one who cant get my head round it, but you've given me the confidence to give it a go (and hopefully you'll be around if I have any major problems ).
Your stole looks stunning, and I love the colours! I think your method of doing the middle join is much neater, although personally I prefer the pattern all going one way Did you find many mistakes with the pattern? I read a blog review which really criticised this pattern for the errors, but have managed to find a couple of corrections although strangely they are not on Eunny's site.
Thanks so much for your help! Just waiting for yarn and then I shall start

Piglottie, I have just finished this stole and I just knitted the whole thing without making two halves and you would never know. Also, the border did seem daunting at first but before I started picking up stitches I divided it into sections all the way round with safety pins to allow me to pick up the stitches evenly. I found that it was one of those things that kind of worked out and became clearer as I went along.
I now have the VLT book and to be honest, their instructions blew my mind and I went back to the method Eunny Describes n her pattern. Once you ahve done this once, it will all become clear

I have just knitted a shawl from the VTL book and was worried about the border but once you get started it all makes sense.
In the VTL book, basically on the WS you knit the last st and the edge st of the shawl together. Only tricky bit is working around the corners when you need to knit into the same edge stitch (on hte main shawl) 2 or 3 times but the pattern should tell you how to do this. Let me know if you ened any help.
