Beanie with visor pattern - FINISHED!!

I've seen a hat I want to try and crochet - at last!! But I can't find a pattern for it, only finished hats to buy. Rolling Eyes Has anyone seen a pattern, cos I can't find one anywhere. Laughing It looks like this, it's basically a beanie with a visor, not a baker boy hat. Wink

Binty

Could you adapted a beanie pattern?
CJ

Well, I've only just learnt to crochet, so don't think I'm that clever yet. Laughing
Catknit

Thats a lovely hat but I'm sorry I can't help with crochet Sad
CJ

oh well, on with the hunt then!! Wink
Blossom

Where did you find the picture??? Would you not be able to email the owner of the page and find out the pattern??! Smile
CJ

She sells the hats on etsy, so I don't think she's going to give away her pattern!! Wink
KnittingLadybird

CJ it looks like a basic beanie...then when you have the size you want you just work back and forth instead of going round..decreasing at either end of visor to shape it. A bit like doing a heel flap on a sock Wink

crochet today issue feb/march 07

If you can get hold of a copy of this...there is one in here. I think you can order back issues from here anyways Very Happy
CJ

thanks all. Laughing

yay, at last I've found a pattern, I had to pay for it though, it's for adults only and now I need some aran weight cotton. Rolling Eyes It's here at Croshay Designs if anyone is interested. Wink

Anyone know how to size it down for the little ones? Embarassed
KnittingLadybird

just try using using dk weight and a smaller hook....sorry not much help I know.
CJ

I have my mum on the case now. She can do the testing. Twisted Evil Laughing
CJ

Well, as my mum has crocheted 2 of these hats now already, I thought I'd better start one. Laughing She says they only took one hour each. Shocked It took me that long to crochet 4 rounds. Embarassed Laughing Mind you, it's my first ever crocheting. I've only done a few rows to practise dc and trc before. Confused I even did a tension square and it was virtually spot on, a mm out. Smile

wish me luck. Laughing Laughing I'm using DB pure cotton, the new aran weight one, and it's lovely and soft and crochets nicely. Very Happy
CJ

I've put a piccie of the one my mum made and my paltry progress so far on my blog. Laughing Off to dye some yarn now. Razz
KnittingLadybird

That looks fab CJ...and your progress is very neat so be proud. How did you mum resize it? if you mind me asking.
CJ

Laughing Laughing my mum didn't resize it, she just used the said hook, 5.5mm - her tension must have been way off. Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes

I, on the other hand, did a tension square and got the tension there abouts with the same hook as mum. Confused
KnittingLadybird

oooh....how on earth do you do a tension square for crochet?????.....i'm a fudger if i'm being honest...at least yours will fit you Wink
CJ

the pattern wanted tension on 11sts and 6 rows to 4", so I crocheted a row of 11sts and did 6 rows. Then measured it, and it was just under 10cm both ways!! Wink
CJ

Well, it's finished. Yay. And it even looks quite neat and like a hat. Very Happy Shocked However, it's destined for DH, cos even though my tension was fine, it's too big. Rolling Eyes I'll try and get a photo of him wearing it tomorrow, as it just looks like a lump of cotton flat on the bed, and no way am I subjecting you lot to my ugly mug in an over large hat. Twisted Evil
KnittingLadybird

sounds brill CJ...i'm off to dig around for cotton and give this a go soon.
CJ

Well, I've put up a piccie on my blog. It's far too huge - any suggestions on which size hook to try next!! DH is refusing to have it. Sad
chrissy

LOL that is so funny, it looks like you need to go much smaller and even a thinner yarn for it, but don't know what or how
cazzie

Tis a tad big Very Happy What yarn was it in?
CJ

it's debbie bliss pure cotton, the aran weight. the pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, so I thought it would be ok.

any tips on how to tighten up my tension, cos it's a bit slack at the moment!! Wink

and does anyone have a bigger head to me that wants a free hat?? I'd hate for it to sit around unused, or unpick it, as it's my first ever bit of crochet and I'm proud of it!! Very Happy
cazzie

How about trying a 4mm hook?
CJ

OK, will give that a go. better sign off then Wink
pictish

It's a lovely hat - pity it came out a bit big Sad I can't really see DH wearing that sorry Laughing Laughing Laughing
gilraen

I don't think it looks like a man's hat CJ Smile It is lovely, well done on getting it finished. Smile
CJ

thanks, it does actually look hilarious on him. Twisted Evil Laughing I should have guessed it might not fit me, cos I've often bought kids' hats in the past. Rolling Eyes

version 2 is in progress now, on 4.5mm hook, as didn't have a 4mm. I've compared it against the one my mum made that fits me, and the tension now looks very similar. fingers crossed this may actually be of some use. Wink
