Baktus/Karius KALSeeing as there's a few of us knitting this at the moment i thought i would start a KAL thread
I'm knitting mine with Drops Fabel in shade #162 which is mostly turquoise but has orangey bits in it as well as fairisley bits and i'm about halfway through the first ball. I am loving the pattern so far, as is my friend who i've decided will be getting it for Chrimble!
I shall attempt to get a photo now before it gets too dark out
What is everyone else using and how are you getting on with it?

Here is mine so far - not alot done yet
Yarn is Violet Green 100% Merino sock - no idea of colour - I must have had it around 3 years! I'm knitting mine on 4mm needles.

oooh can I join in?? I have a few ideas on yarn
#1 smootherino (rainbow)
#2 opal ladybird
#3 unknown silky viscose (made mini monkeys ages ago???)
option #4 is to buy more sock yarn......

I like the look of that Wonder if I have some nice blueish yarn, could knit one for DGS, just seen a couple of young male models wearing theirs

I like the look of this but have too much stuff OTN at present to cast on just yet, plenty of sock yarn in stash to make one in the future though.

Mine is being made using Opal feelings, which is stripey, and blue. I'll get a photo shortly although I haven't done much of it. I'm thinking it might be handy to pop into my hospital bag incase I get bored during labour
|
franney
|
Ooooh Cazzie, that's yummy isn't it
Here's my Baktus so far...
This is literally just my "mindless" project. The sock i am knitting at the moment requires concentration and a pattern at all times as do the hats i have on the go (seemingly constantly!!) so this is for when i need knitting but can't concentrate on anything. I'm teaching myself to knit without looking too and can nearly do a whole row

erm - help? What is Baktus/Karius? it's a new one on me, I've obviously missed a load of posts somewhere where it's been discussed in detail and feeling very left out
All the ones here look lovely though. Whatever they are ...

I have started mine now in some Manos silk blend that I got from Jobo!
I love mindless knits and this is perfect. I divided the yarn into 2 balls and am alternating every 2 rows so it doesn't pool.

franney & lindyloop - they are both looking fab too
I'm using mine as a kick start back into knitting after not having much time over last couple of months. Mine grew quite a bit last night - I did some while we watched Slumdog Millionaire on DVD

Don't be daft, silly mare! it took two seconds to repost the details, it was no big deal hun. There are so many posts it is so easy to miss details, and you are certainly not a dunce!!
Now, your penance is to cast on a Baktus immeeeeeeeeeeeeeediately!!

I'm in the same position Joy! Hadn't even considered this until I finally realised what exactly it was. Bloomin' Franney Mindless knitting, it does sounds perfect And all the ones posted on here so far do look lovely!
| franney wrote: | Now, your penance is to cast on a Baktus immeeeeeeeeeeeeeediately!! |
well, oh Knitalong Mistress, if you insist then I suppose I'd better
I'm thinking perhaps some Lornas Laces. Cos it already handily comes in two balls so I won't have to do any of that pesky weighing or maths Next problem, needle size ...
|
Aknita
|
Lornas Laces? What a good idea. I might have just the thing.
I also have some KPPPM which might do the trick too.

I'm knitting mine on 4mm - trying to get it with a bit of drape The merino I'm using is a thin-ish one.
Looks as though most of the ones on Ravelry are knit on sizes 3mm to 4mm
|
franney
|
Good girls!
I can't wait to see what you come up with Joy and FC, i do hope there'll be a progress photo or two
I'm knitting mine on a 3mm bamboo circular and i knit loose and it's making a lovely fabric, it's a fab project you know

I'd go for it too Linz
|

Yeah, another one saying go for it Linz!
I did sort of start one last night, but then major indecision set in. Wasn't sure about my yarn choice. Or the design. Or whether I even really wanted one So I'm still thinking about it .... watch this space. But don't hold your breath, it may be a while ...
|
franney
|
@FC
You can always make it and keep it in your "emergency gift box" - we all have one, right??
Mine was claimed straight away but i don't mind really cos i don't like the turquoise now it's knitted up anyway but i need something garter and it's nice to be organised for Chrimble
|
cazzie

I'm nearly at half way stage on mine - been and brought some beads this morning for the ends
|
FatCat
|
Ooh Cazzie, beads! Lovely! Looking forward to seeing that And Franney, will you be making another one for you?
I had a sudden moment of clarity at lunchtime , realised exactly what yarn I wanted to use, hunted it down and cast on. Oh the benefits of working from home Not much to show so far, but here it is.
It's Lornas Laces in Amy's Vintage Office. And I don't know what is up with my attention span these days I'm managing to lose track of where I am and have to count rows to know whether I'm on a increase row or not
|
cazzie
|
Ooo what a fab colour
I try and do mine in blocks of 4 rows so I dont get lost
|
FatCat
|
Thanks!
Yeah, I've been doing the 4 rows at a time thing too. Well, trying to! Trouble is my brain has wandered off and away by the time I've done half of row 1 ....

FC, that's gorgeous
I will be making one for myself at some point, i expect i shall just have one continously on the needles for the foreseeable future
There's another couple of sock yarns that i think would make great scarves and i do love a garter project
|
FatCat
|
Thanks Franney I was completely torn between using a yarn that was was stripy or something that was more variegated. So I might have to make another one with some really stripy stuff

They do look fab!
I've done no more on mine since the weekend as i've been home and doing non-mindless knitting
This might be quite a loooooooong KAL for me

|
How's everyone getting on with their scarves?
I've done no travelling this week so mine's not grown at all!! I have two socks and a hat on the go at the moment too so i don't want to knit on it at home cos then i won't have time for the more complicated stuff! lol
|
cazzie
|
I havent done any for a couple of days - hope to do a bit over the weekend but did cast on for a summer top last night
|
franney
|
I've done at least another 20 rows today during my travels, nearly at the end of the first 50g!!
|
KnittingLadybird
|
I'm halfway...i'll get a pic later. Mine is in DK though on 5mm, so it's gone pretty quickly (great for knitting in the dark).
You'll need your on...it's bright...
|
cazzie

I got a bit done last night while I watched the end of a film Just under 10g from half way.
|
lindyloop
|
Same as me!! Well 12 grams from halfway!

Mine so far I'm using Regia Silk Color which is so soft and just right for a wee boy's neck
ETA: I'm using 3mm needles
|
lindyloop

Thats nice Janice, I like the feel of Regia silk.
|
franney

Great going everyone!
Janice, that looks lovely and you're right, it's just right for a small boy
|
FatCat
|
that looks lovely Janice!
I've been away travelling the past few days, and as my travelling involves trains and ferries my travelling knitting is always a sock - takes up less room, both to carry and to work on! But I got home last night, exhausted, and did a few more rows on my Baktius just to relaz and switch my brain off Got a long way to go on it though, only up to 30 stitches so far, so it'll be a while. Might have it done for the winter
|
franney
|
It's such a nice project to pick up and put down though FC, it's not too hard to work out if you're (one's) on an increase section or not and there's no counting
I took mine out with me today and managed another 20 or so rows, i don't think it'll be long before the second ball joins the party... and then it's all decreasing and i am so looking forward to it!
|
FatCat
|
ah, but I didn't have the right size circ so I'm on straights and they are seriously not commuter-train friendly You're speeding along on yours though, I shall definitely be bringing up the rear on this particular KAL
|
franney
|
Ahhhhhhhhh, i seeeeeeeeeee
Yeah, straights are not commuter friendly
I'll let you off this time
|
cazzie
|
I'm finding it easier to keep track of the increases as long as I do in blocks of 4 - (2 straight rows after the one that ends knit into back of the yarn forward and then knit 1) might have to keep a tally for the decreases though
|

I would have thought straights were great for a commuter train, that way you could guarantee some space.
I wouldn't worry about being behind, I have yet to cast on, planning on taking it away with me to woolfest to knit on in the hotel. I have some Jojoland melody lined up for it, and it comes in 50g balls so no need to work out when I'm halfway.
|
Wildpurl
|
I just decided last night to knit one of these and I see this thread
I'm going to spin some yarn for this - and I know which fibre
I'm going to use, too. But it will take a few weeks at least.
They're cool aren't they? I'm going for Baktus as I like garter stitch and I'll use it to practise my continental knitting

My Fabel comes in 50g balls too. I'm rather glad as i know for a fact that i'd never remember to keep track of the weight

If i lose track of what row i'm on i tend to just unpick the last two stitches of the row on the sloping side to see if i increased nthe previous two rows or not
I'm hoping that it'll be as easy for me to keep track of the decreases
I'm looking forward to seeing all these scarves as they grow, they will all be so different!

Lindy and KLB. I hadn't seen these before but having researched them what a super way to use up yarn. I can see they'll be popular for "C"

I'm so glad I found this thread. I have two balls of bamboo/cotton in gorgeous shades, onelis plain turquoise, the other is shades of blues. I had no idea what to do with them and was going to use them up on dishcloths. I am now doing a baktus and it looks great.

For anyone wanting to use Dk...
I used 75g-ish, 5mm needles. I increased to 55sts before dec.
Final measurements are 142cm acrorss the length (straight edge) and 30cm from centre to point (widest bit)....not a bad size and it's well quick

Well, my second Baktus is allmost finished - i've run out of yarn with about 14 decreases still to go! I don't know how that happened, but i'm guessing either one ball was slightly longer or one is slightly shorter... or a mixture of the two!
I tried to fudge the end with some blue and pink but no matter how i did the stripes it just didn't look right - you know?
I'm not sure whether to do another Baktus now or a domino type scarfy thing - i have an itch what wants scratching
|
