Bag-A-Long...............

As discussed on another thread. Is anyone interested in making a bag? It can be knitted, crocheted, sewn, or I suppose even papercrafted etc.

I for one am thinking about making one of Noni Bags that I bought the yarn and patterns for but never got started. Smile

Anyone else got a project in mind. There are lots of free patterns out there. and SKD does Eskimo yarn if you need inexpensive felting yarn. Smile
dreamcatcher

I've been wanting to make a bag to use daily for all my junk that I carry around Very Happy I'm thinking something like a messenger bag shape and size. It would also be a good project for me to learn how to use the sewing machine for making a bag lining.
Piglottie

I would love to join this, and would like to do one of the Noni bags. I'm torn between the pig one (which I love and in a way, so have to knit but wonder how much I would use it) and the bobbles one. Or maybe even a booga bag. Hmmm, decisions, decisions. But I wouldn't be able to join until next month but can watch you lot get started while I make my mind up Smile
Rosie

Ohhhh id love to do a bag - im getting some noro for my birthday next month to do a booga but could do something else in the meantime Smile
gilraen

Piglottie and Rosie have you got any non wash wool or combo?

Dreamcatcher did you see the Amy Butler patttern on GK for the 'work bag' ?

What about one of these....

and these!!!Wow

http://www.bloomoon.com/b4.html The B4bag which is a lovely bag to knit. I've knit 2. Smile
n

There are LOTS of b4's here

http://b4bag.blogspot.com/

Very very tempting.....
Do you think it would work in my merino sock yarn, Gilraen?
Would you mind comparing what you used before with your prize yarn and see what the weights are like for me please?

n
ClaireUK

I think I will do a B4 bag in Kureyon. I have the yarn and pattern already. I will use 1 strand and line the bag. I dont like buttons and beads so I'm going to make some flowers from Nicky Epsteins book 'Knitted Embellishment' and decorate it with that.

Hey, thanks guys, my mojo just came back!!! Making something just for fun is great : )

Claire UK
gilraen

You would need to double thread your yarn. I've used Kureyon and Karaoke both before. Cascade 220 would need to be doubled and I would compare that thread to your Merino Natalie, Lamb's Pride Bulky one thread and Worsted 2, Eskimo I think is 1 thread as it is a bulky wool.

Does that help? Smile

Although the noro bag is lovely looking, it doesn't compare for texture and strength to the Karoke. I want to knit one in the new Karaoke colours as I love the firmness of the yarn, or use multicolours to create the same effect. That's for the future though. Smile
n

Thank you, it does.... what size of needles?
I may need to go shopping, I only possess circs and dpns. Embarassed

n
ClaireUK

If I make it with 1 strand of Kureyon, and line it, will it be strong enough then? Or should I have a re-think?

Thanks, Claire UK
Piglottie

I like the B4 bag too, but think I will put that on hold for now. I really want to do either a Booga bag (I've seen some lovely Noro in a shade I love but US only Sad ) or one of the Noni bags (I shall get the yarn on my next Stashalong day off). Smile
n

What have you done to me.... I just bought the pattern.
But I MUST NOT CAST ON until I have finished a pair of socks.... you lot have got me up to the heady heights of three WIP's and that's unheard of!
Four would make me ill.

Thanks, I hadn't looked at those as sewing patterns are a bit advanced for me at the moment! Lovely bag though Very Happy I am off to get my SnB book out and see what I would need for those messenger bags.

ETA: think I will use this as a basic template, the smaller version:

http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer05/PATTsatchel.html

I've got some very woolly Welsh aran in stash that would do nicely for this.
gilraen

I use 6 or 7mm circs for these. If anyone needs a loan of circs to do this I have a few and can lend some.

I used one strand of Kureyon and the bag definitely needs stiffener and lining. But it would be great if those were added. Smile

When are you starting on this bag-along? I'd like to join in to make up the bag kit that Jon the Yank bought for my birthday a couple of years ago, which would be brill for teaching practice; I need to get the two pairs of socks on DPNs done first though as my mini projects.

Balloon Bag

This is another nice - quick to knit felted bag - I did one in Noro last year - which i really must finish off Very Happy

ETA: Just realised its on Murdo's thread too
Rosie

Gilraen - I dont have any non wash wool - i only have a very small stash tho i do spend a lot of PC time looking at stuff to make it bigger Smile

So i need a smiple pattern which could use the eskimo as stated earlier as I could afford this Very Happy

Aknita

Ooooh I am going to join in and use the Debbie Bliss Soho that my Christms Yarn Fairy bought me. And I don't want to burst any bubbles here, but NOTHING would enduce me to

a) knit a booga bag
b) felt with Kureyon

ever again. But those are just my opinions of course Wink and I'm grumpy today so don't take any notice of me Evil or Very Mad
Piglottie

LOL Joy! I've used Kureyon before, and as much as I didn't like knitting with it (very coarse, breaks easily) it felted OK for me. Did you have a problem with it? And did you not like the booga bag pattern?

I really want to knit a Noni bag, but would probably get more use out of a booga bag as I don't often go anywhere that needs a posh bag Smile

Debs - I cant start this until mid-June at the earliest but not sure about the others. We could tag along later Smile
Aknita

I had problems felting it PL, and had to try 3 times - during that process it lost all it's colour Shocked. It was also smaller than I'd anticipated - bur that was my fault, it was the size it said it would be, but until you've knitted and felted you don't know what size it will be. I just assumed it would be bigger.

It actually cost a lot of money too 'cos I bought it in kit form Rolling Eyes I should have just bought all the things seperately, it would have been much cheaper.
pictish

I remember this Joy Cool But I thought at the time it still looked lovely. But when I tried the Kureyon myself I hated it Evil or Very Mad But I have 2 kits now for felted bags PLUS the B4 pattern Wink And I love the Organic felted bag in Rowan 40.
gilraen

I love that bag too Ali. Fiona (KnitsKnats and Knots) did one lasty year and it looked fabulous.

I have Pursenality and Pursenality Plus. I have Nicky Epstein's Fabulous Felted Bags. If anyone wanted a pattern from those I could lend the book. I also have several Noni Bag and Flower patterns I could lend, so long as I'm not using it myself Smile

Booga Bag is a good beginners pattern but I think there are much better felting yarns than Kureyon. Although I love their colours to bits. Trendsetter yarns, Twilleys Freedom and Karaoke are on sale at AY. As Joy said DB Soho makes lovely felted bags, I've made a small 'Pink Lady Bag' Picture here. And GK has some DB Maya on sale too.

Plenty to choose from there. Some free bag patterns here
pictish

I have a Twilley's Freedom bag kit 'Party Nights' in bright red with fluffy trim!! And the Fibre Trends Sheep Tote pattern with some DB Maya. Both are quite small bags I think tho. The B4 and Organic look bigger.

I wiil have a sort out and may join in but not immediately Gilraen Cool
Cathie

I agree with the noro yarn, I couldn't get it to felt properly either, didn't have an colour fading through.

I am going to join this, I wasn't going to but I really want to make the pig bag, and I would use it as well. Was talking to my mum about it and I just had the rolly eyes look, but I bet when she see's mine she will want one of her own as well

Cathie
GrannySmith

I am interested in this; after alot of looking I am going to combine two patterns, a backpack with a mitre square pattern Rolling Eyes

Time will tell if I can do it Very Happy
Princess Sahara

I'm halfway through my first ever booga bag - does this mean I can still join in too? Smile
Rosie

im still very lost with this cant decide what pattern to use but i do like twilleys freedom in sunrise so that waht i want to knit it in Smile

any help welcome ..... i just want something easy to knit that could carry some sock knitting when finished i guess Smile

sadly im still at the - buy pattern - buy wool its states on pattern - then knit carefully following instructions Very Happy
gilraen

What do you need to help you decide? Smile

The free Booga Pattern is good for a project bag. And any feltable wool will do Smile

If you want intsruction help just ask. Smile
ClaireUK

OK, I'm completely lost here and need some help....

I want to make a B4 bag. I have the pattern and I was going to use Kureyon but am not sure now. Kareoke is a bit expensive. Will Eskimo do?

Thanks, Claire UK
n

This is a hedgehog bag...

Takes one ball of Rowan Big Wool (the plain one, the variable thickness one has tiny yardage and is no good) and one skein of something like Foxy.

It's about 7 inches square and VERY easy.

n
n

I meant to ask... what does "bulky" mean on the b4 bag.... I have roving which is a little thicker than Big Wool, and will knit like a fat yarn !!!

This is it compared to the merino....

I dyed some yesterday, so I even have it on the shelf....

n
gilraen

Claire Eskimo would be great. You can either do one colour or use a few and do different colour bobbles, bumps, handles etc. Like in this bag.

n the bottom left yarn looks perfect. So long as it's not treated to be washable. Can you cut a snip and test it with a cup of boiling water etc? Smile
ClaireUK

OOh I like the multicoloured idea Gilraen. And of course there would be bits left over to try felted scandinavian mittens too : ) because I would HAVE to buy several colours, wouldnt I ????

Thanks, Claire UK
gilraen

Of course Claire! Wink Smile
Cathie

I can't decide.

I really want to make the pig bag, and my mum having seen the pattern wants a pot belly pig with a shoulder strap for Christmas.

But I also like a couple of the other bags as well. The adventure bag and cherry blossom bag, but it looks complicated with the flowers all over it. I know I would use the pig bag as I like quirky things, the adventurer bag would be more practical but the cherry blossom is so pretty.

Cathie
gilraen

Have you made one before Cathie? Smile
Cathie

No, not knitted a bag to felt before, I'm tempted to get both patterns but the wool for the one and go from there, and do the pig first and it says intermediate beginer I think so I should be okay with that

Cathie
gilraen

Sounds good. Smile
Cathie

Well it did, but have looked on get knitted this morning and she doesn't have the shade in needed for the small pig, now I can't decide which colour pink to go for she has 7 shades of pink in, now if it where a choice of one it would be simple.

Just found it now, I thought the list was in numerical order but it appears all the colours are grouped together.
Cathie

So

When do we start knitting then? Along with my dreamy bamboo yarn this afternoon I also recieved the year of the pig bag pattern and some yarn.

Only thing's I need to find now are the bag feet and a zip for it, I really must finish a few bits before starting through, Embarassed

I wonder...i'm definately going to knit a dalek....so if I turn it into a bag...can I join in here too? lol

Will he be levitating?
Isn't that how they get upstairs to your bedroom in the middle of the night?
n
KnittingLadybird

I'm hoping to weigh him down with my usual bag crap...trust me he won't make 2 inches off the ground lol
Civilknit

I've got four balls of Rowan Tapestry recycled from a failed Clapotis. I quite like the Organic bag from Rowan 40 but don't want to buy the whole book just for one pattern.

I've also got six balls of Twilleys Freedom wool, but only four of them are colours that can be used together. The other two are a beautiful greeny blue but the yardage is so small I don't think I can make anything out of just two balls. Sad

Any ideas?

Janice
gilraen

What colours altogether do you have? Could you post a photo of them?
melody yarns

The pattern that I have in my bag kit has me knitting squares that are mitred, and I already have the bag handles and lining fabric that I bought some time ago.... I shall have to take a piccie of my kit and stuff at the weekend Wink

Maybe if we don't already have bag patterns, or want to use up oddments of yarn, we could use the mitred squares approach? Just a thought anywhoodle....
Civilknit

I quite like the idea of mitres , they're so profesional looking - but I think I prefer rounder things.

Gilraen - it's too dark to take photos on my c****y phone camera but I've got two balls of Twilleys Freedom in Moorland (Rust, blue, beige). one ball of claret and one ball of soft blue, which all go together; and I've got two balls of ocean, which doesn't go with the others.
gilraen

Okay I'll have a look Smile

If all the others blend...let them....i'd use the other 2 (ocean?) to make a feature...
pictish

I've cast on for mine Cool The one I'm doing first is the Twilley's Freedom one which is tres glitzy and is in bright red Freedom Wool knitted with a strand of black/red/glittery Paris Mohair and it is edged with scarlet Wendy Chic Shocked Shocked So not me it's unbelievable but I have seen these knitted up in a different colour and I like them. Here it is here After that might use some of my precious DB Maya with the Fiber Trends Sheep Tote pattern.
n

Lovely... looks like a swinging bag to me... where's murdo? Or Noo?
Laughing

Wildpurl

Wow, some bag Ali! You need a slinky black (or indeed red) dress to go with that!
Piglottie

Oooh, I love it Ali! I have decided not to do a Noni bag atm as I have just started Shoalwater, and have some knitting presents to make, that I just wont have time. However, I have been wanting to knit the Spiral Bag from One Skein for ages (see here http://oneskein.blogspot.com/2007/05/spiral-rib-bag_02.html ) and finally managed to get hold of some Colinette Chrysalis from ebay for the princely sum of £2.20 Smile It should be a quick knit, so I shall start this soon and save one of the Noni bags for later in the year.
pictish

Oooh very nice PL - I like it in those colours too.

Mr Pictish thinks my bag is hideous Shocked - 'tarty' he says Laughing Laughing I think he might be right Wink
pictish

Am thinking my 'Party Nights' Rolling Eyes is more a winter colour and have started the Sheep Tote in some DB Maya I bought on here from Button Wink in a gorgeous mix of muted purples and green. Not going to put a sheep on this one tho. Pattern here
Piglottie

Oooh, love the new bag Ali and the yarn sounds beautiful.

PS: Tell Mr Pictish that it is kitsch, not tarty Smile
pictish

I've put the glitzy one up for sale Rolling Eyes Sad
Piglottie

Sad Awww Ali! It would make a lovely party bag though Smile
pictish

I'm not really a party person these days Laughing It is gorgeous just not me.

Oooh I really like the 'stash handbag' from the blog that Piglottie showed us, I love the shape of it. The only trouble is that I don't usually have just one skein of anything in stash! I prefer to buy more skeins to knit bigger projects Laughing

I could do with one of those, although usually I'm a one handbag sort of person. I might just order that book for the handbag pattern and the spiral bag alone.
gilraen

http://nooliespatterns.blogspot.com/2007/01/noolies-felted-purse.html a free felted bag pattern. Noolie also has a free non felted knitted bag pattern Smile
Princess Sahara

Here's my bag-a-long bag - you've probably all already seen it in the gallery Very Happy A booga bag knitted in Wendy Fusion Juniper Berries.

Nevisknitter

Seeing your bag has inspired me to get my kureyon out of stash and make a booga bag,
For anyone looking for a small bag, magknits has a pattern called kureyon chan using 1 skein, made it last week but still to sew handles on. It is very small though.
Piglottie

Ooh Sarah, love your bag and the colours are wonderful. Might have to try the Wendy fusion to knit a Booga bag with, as the Kureyon is so harsh. Although it will have to wait awhile. Smile
Rosie

Ok guys got some wool & started knitting my first ever booga bag tonight BUT when i read the pattern thro it says it will only be very small - is this right ?? what size did your come out those of u who have already done one ????

ive had one of those depressing nights - i need new DPNs for my nephews longies so had to stop knitting them & now im unsure about the bag which i also started tonight Sad

please any advice

thanks
gilraen

Mine, and I knit 4 at one point or other, were large enough to hold a fat A5 diary etc. Smile
Rosie

Oh thanks gilraen i wanted to be able to put my sock knitting in it so that should fit phew Smile

end of panic lol
gilraen

They are definitely that big Very Happy
Cathie

I'm afraid I will be bowing out of this Sad In the last 3 days I have had an influx of orders from babykind 5 in total and all in XL sized. Which is good but also a good 35-40 hours work. So that will keep me pretty busy for the next week or so. So my knitting has been put on the back burner

I have made a start on my pig bag though and done 2 inches on the main bag and the wool is lovely to work with. Hopefully I can pick it up week after next

Cathie
gilraen

Don't worry Cathie we will all be taking our time over this some quicker, some slower. I haven't even decided which bag I will do next....................Smile

Besides your other knitting pays some of the bills. Go girl go, and good luck Smile
gilraen

Some inspiration??
murdo

Gilrean...that ladies bags are fab....she must join here so I can drool regularly!!!
gilraen

I love her bags...............the way she finishes them is fantastic.............Smile

Want to invite her? Wink
murdo

Go on...you do it...she may not understand my accent Smile
pictish

What about the Celebrity Boob Twin thing tho Shocked Confused Laughing
murdo

...don't even go there...unless they have a washboard wearing a frock I won't get a match
pictish

Laughing Laughing There are plenty of celebs who DON'T quite match up to Pammy's assets so I think we'd be ok Razz I wasn't sure whether she was serious tho Confused Laughing
murdo

I've checked..they don't have my size...no AA in the relevant category Smile I think we should invite her...she has amazing knitting...seems to have a sense of humour and a bigger chest than me.
pictish

The bags are gorgeous!! Cool
gilraen

I don't have any matches in the Celebrity Boobs either Rolling Eyes Laughing
murdo

yooohoo...mods...anyone want to invite this lady to join???
Rosie

HELP - ive been knitting my booga bag am 6 rows out of 64 now Smile BUT just reading the pattern & i should have picked up & knited TWISTED sts along 2 edges & i didnt Sad

Does it matter ???? should i undo it ??????
pictish

Oooh Rosie I don't know sorry Shocked - where's gilraen she'll know Cool
murdo

ok...I am no expert BUT I know twisted stitches, when done intentionally just slightly tighten/give a decorative effect. So dont think it;s particularly significant???
gilraen

Don't worry it's not a problem..........you are going to felt it...............you won't notice Wink Very Happy

I'd never heard of twisted stitches and didn't use them when I first made my bags. Smile
Rosie

HURRAH thanks gilraen i feel better now Smile

Everything is getting to me today as i hurt my back somehow this morning & its hurts loads WAH

At least i get to sit still & knit
gilraen

Poor you, can you take anti-inflammatories like Ibuprofen? Smile
Rosie

yes am taking them - its more stiff than painful this am & OH did dinner last night so i could just rest bless him as hes not one of natures great chefs Smile

Still no idea how i did it tho - but i was struggling with a sun parasol in the am to sheild the paddling pool sooooo that could be it Sad
gilraen

I hope it clears up asap Smile

How's your bag getting on? Smile
Rosie

This is it so far

i decided on Twilleys freedom in shade fire Smile

a bit more muted in real life flash does distort photos Sad

got about 14 more rounds to knit then waiting on new DPNs for icord !
gilraen

You can start your i-cord with your circular, just move it from one end to the other, it's just a longer push, you can swap for the dpns when they turn up Smile

It looks good. Nice and bright, felting tends to mute some yarns so bright is really good. Smile
pictish

It'll be lovely in the Twilleys Fire Rosie!!
Rosie

Ooooh thanks gilraen ill do that till they arrive Smile

yeah i love this bag already - nice relaxing knitting & it feels lovely & soft - cant wait to felt it Very Happy
Dawn

I am going to have a go at a Booga bag with the yarn leftover from my Central Park Hoodie, Rowan Yorkshire Tweed in a dark green. If that works out ok I will buy some Wendy Fusion in a brighter colour for a second one. Have ordered a 6.5mm circular so as soon as that comes I will get started. am working on my cph at the moment, only have a sleeve and the bands to do.
