Armhole decreases.I'm at the point where I need to decrease for the armhole in my tunic. The pattern says to
1) work row 4 (this is about an inch in height as it's the fan section)
2) Then on the next row slip st to the middle dtr of the first fan (this creates a cast off of so many stitiches equivalent if I was knitting) and work the next row to the end of the row.
Then repeat the last 2 rows.
Surely if I do this my armholes will be stepped by about an inch( the height of row 4). And the cast offs will both be on the same side?
What would happen if instead of working to the end of row 2 I just stopped short?

Now I'm not an experienced crocheter at all but you have to do turning chains at the end of a row to ensure that the end stays straight and the stitch count stays right don't you? Could you compensate by working the turning chains at the end of the short row to make sure you have the correct stitch count etc?? I don't really know what I'm talkng about so maybe it's best to ignore me....

Actually when I re-read the pattern in the peace and quiet, it all made sense. I did have to stop short on the 2nd row and when I repeated the 2 rows again it created a gently sloping cast off edge for the armholes at both sides.
Next time I'll not panic when I'm trying something new!! Yeah right

Oh I know how you feel -- when I read the instructions for socks for the first time it made no sense whatsoever and a friend on another forum advised me to knit blindly following the instructions. All I have to do now is check the stitch counts to make sure I've got the right amount.
