Anybody seen The Knitter yet?

It's out today and mentioned on Rav.
Aknita

I haven't seen it. There was a mention of it on Working Lunch on Monday. Not much info on their website.
daisydap

i havent seen it yet either, thought it may be out on the thursday as all the others are, will look out for it next time i am in smiths
malteser

I picked up a copy today bit haven't looked at it yet, but it seems to be quite good quality paper and it was not in a plastic bag. I got a copy from the newsagents in the market hall but I did see it in WHS as well.
Oblonsky

I picked up a copy today at Morrisons - quite prominently displayed. Only had a quick flick through so far. First impressions : good quality paper, more advanced patterns than used to in SK, not loads of 'how to' pages on the basics.

I'll have a proper read later  Smile
Anna

I'm going to pop into WHSmith on my way home tomorrow and have a looksee.
YarnAddict

I picked one up earlier today and had a quick flick through it. Would like to have a more thorough look but got an urgent knitting project to do so no time. But first impressions are good. Much better than SK.

Hoping to pick up a copy tomorrow  Very Happy Hope Morrisons are stocking it, I was surprised to see Sew Hip in there the other week - I even bought a copy! And very good it is too. Then I spotted YF in our local WH Smith, will wonders never cease  Laughing

There is a sub offer for The Knitter now, it's 25% off the cover price.
Sprite64

The lady in our local newsagents has just ordered a couple of copies so I'm going to try and get it from her. She showed me a piccy of it - like the look of the jumper on the front cover. Can anyone tell me what sizes the patterns go up to?
Anna

I got a copy today and it's almost like a book! Lovely glossy pages, very thick, much thicker than SK or similar mags, glued not stapled and definitely a coffee table mag to look at.

The patterns are lovely. Okay, so some of them aren't my style, but I can see them being nice on the right person. The editor states that they plan to have a "theme" each month, this month being cables and lace. I noticed more cables than lace but then cables do stand out more! I LOVE the Martin Storey (?) lace long jacket. I would be seriously tempted to knit this, but as it uses Rowan Kid Classic I'd have to sub a cheaper yarn  Confused  unless I found a perfect sale bargain!

I am definitely looking out for this next month, hoping it has started as it means to go on! Although £5.99 seems a lot for a monthly mag, if I don't buy any magazines other than this it is actually cheaper than buying the two or three "ok" magazines that I currently do.

Thanks Anna that sounds promising!!! My local newsagent didn't have it - will have to try in town.

I think it's definitely worth buying the first issue so you can have a good look at leisure, as opposed to a quick flick in a shop, and then make your mind up from there.

I'm so sick of hat and magic wand cover patterns in other mags, I have high hopes for this one. Even my mum agreed that most current high-street knitting mags seemed to be aimed at beginners or near beginners and while there is a place for that, the more experienced knitter is left out.

Edited to add: I never think of myself as a "more experienced knitter" but it appears that I am    notworthy <-----the nearest I could get to taking a bow!!!

Laughing You mean you don't think you need a wand cosy? Shocked
Anna

My wand is cosy enough, thank you  Laughing

Oh gosh, that sounded rude  Shocked  It's lucky I'm not a man or it would sound even ruder  Shocked  Laughing  Laughing
Aknita

I'm going to look for a copy today before I decide whether to subscibe or not. I'm not sure I have the capacity for both this and Yarn Forward.

I was just thinking - this makes 6 British knitting mags doesn't it Shocked
Fi

Oh might get this when I go to Morrisons tomorrow.
janice

Haven't managed to track down a copy yet   Confused    Wonder if the wee newsagents will have it  Laughing
Glynis

I've not seen a copy yet, but I read somewhere that it would be £5.99.

I'm off to town later so I'll check WH Smith. I'd pay that to evaluate a first copy, but it is quite expensive to consider on a whim too often.

I guess that's the thing-  they know the sub price will look good value against the issue by issue price, and then they get your money up front and can plan ahead more effectively.
daisydap

i had a flick through one in smiths yesterday, very good quality of magazine, more like the american 'glossys' but i didnt like any of the patterns so didnt bother buying it, its a good job it wasnt in a wrapper otherwise i would have had to buy it and been disappointed.

I've just done the same. I looked at the patterns and thought that nothing really appealed to me, so I put it back again. Maybe I'm just getting picky in my old age Sad
pictish

I think it has to be pretty good to justify that price tho doesn't it - I feel we're a bit overloaded now with mags every month. I might go and look for this or I might just not bother Confused It's not as if I need any more patterns Wink
Nevisknitter

I had a flick through in smiths but the only pattern I liked was the sirdar one which you can get in the eco knits book, and I reckoned the coller would go saggy on that.  At least I know I can buy it up here, have yet to see yarn forward for sale in Fort William.

Good point, but most mags cater for a different market than this one appears to. I rarely buy mags any more - only yarn forward if there's plenty in it that I like.
Fi

Thought it was quite good, nice to have another UK publication too.

Mind I didn't buy mine mil saw it and treat me.
Jobo

I cant find the blooming thing!!  Been to Smiths and sent DH to Tescos earlier - no luck Sad

I am going to try the big Smiths in Eastbourne tomorrow - 15 miles to buy a magazine, I must be mad Laughing   Still I need to buy yet more PE kit for girls Rolling Eyes
Fi

Mine was from smiths, I know our morrisons didn't have it this morning.
loobyj

I bought this today in Sainsburys in Bracknell.  Haven't had a really good look, just a quick flick - but I like the look of it!  I don't really buy any of the other UK mags, just very occasionally if a pattern grabs me.  But, I do like the look and feel of this one.

Is it me - or has anyone beening whistling The Stripper every time they've looked at this thread?!?!?!

lj
Fi

Er no I haven't.
FatCat

I bought this yesterday (in Smiths) and to be honest I'm not overimpressed.  I bought the new Yarn Forward at the same time so did a bit of a comparison.  Both are 98 pages.  The Knitter has 15 patterns against YF's 14, but at least 3 of the 15 have been published elsewhere.

In terms of content I didn't really see that it was particularly different or better than YF  Confused  The only major difference is the paper it's printed on - much heavier, thick and glossier - which I found made it more difficult to read - the blinking thing wouldn't stay open  Rolling Eyes

They do state that they want it to look nice and be a coffee-table read, but personally that's not what I buy knitting magazines for.  It seems to me, and this is just my opinion of course, that I paid £2 extra (£5.99 against YF's £3.99) for a magazine printed on more expensive thickier and glossier paper, not for any dramatic new and exciting content in comparison with existing knitting magazines.    Sad
pictish

Thanks for that FC!! I think I migt look if I get into town - I live about 8 miles away - but otherwise won't bother. I'm going to try and stick with the ones I subscribe to - Knitting and Interweave - apart from the odd other one.
FatCat

Just to say again that what I've put is ONLY my personal opinion of course - other people may well  love it!  We're all different, after all  Very Happy
janice

I managed to eventually track down a copy, but can't say I thought much of it. I was hoping for a bit more considering the cost, which IMO doesn't reflect on what they were giving, and am I the only one getting a bit fed up buying a magazine and finding that I already have half of the patterns in books that I own Rolling Eyes

Sold it on yesterday so I recouped some of my money  Wink
Jo028

I did the same thing as FC,  & briefly compared the same too mags. Only I didn't buy either of them as there was nothing that grabbed me. I really liked Annis sweater in YF, but it's only in small sizes  Crying or Very sad

I saw The Knitter today and was a bit underwhelmed too - too few patterns for the price and only one I liked slightly. Nicely produced tho and laid out. I think I'm just magged out now Laughing  Laughing

For anyone who hasn't yet seen a copy, there is an excerpt here . Call me sad, but it fascinates me that you can turn the pages  Embarassed

Oooh thanks - that's a good offer Laughing
janice

Nope, even 3 for £5 isn't tempting me to part with my money.
malteser

I've had a look through mine and I am so/so about it.

Like Pictish I think I am magged out. I have finally cancelled my subscription to Let's Knit but I still get Knitting, Yarn Forward and Interweave. Because there are so many mags around getting one does not seem as special any more.

What gets me about reprinted patterns in magazines is that Woman's Weekly manages to publish a pattern every week and there are very few patterns taken from elsewhere, yet the dedicated Knitting magazines often have one or more that have been published elsewhere.
pictish

I know Anne you're right and a lot of the WW ones are nicer tbh Confused If you bought all the mags it's about £28 a month or something just for the British ones apart from Interweave/Knitscene/Vogue/knit.1/Knit Simple Shocked

And then if you want to buy pattern books there's the main Rowan, 2 or 3 extra Rowan, all the RYC, a couple of DB ...............

I didn't find a copy here in Malvern. One of the Knit and Natter ladies is bringing me a copy to look through tomorrow.

I thought I had re-subscribed to Yarn Forward but I haven't had my copy yet in spite of it's being in the shops now  Confused

And - to be fair - that's enough for me, I'm not sure I can justify two monthly magazines. Maybe if The Knitter was quarterly .............
pictish

I haven't seen this month's YF Joy but comparing The Knitter to last month's YF I prefer YF - but I thought you would have had your copy now - did you get your resubscrription gift??

No Ali, but I would have expected that to arrive with the magazine  Confused

I've just joined the YF group on Ravelry, and have posted there and emailed Mandy so hopefully it will be resolved shortly.
pictish

Hope so Cool
Aknita

So do I!
modelwidow

DH paid for the YF subscription as part of my Chrimbo pressie and we didn't hear anything for ages, they didn't answer my emails either, so DH gave them a ring and they couldn't have been more helpful, so if you don't hear soon I'd recommend a phone call (numbers on their website)
Aknita

I'm sorry, I seem to have mentioned this on two threads Rolling Eyes

It's all resolved, and very easily too Very Happy
cazzie

Rather belatedly I have brought a copy of The Knitter this morning.  First chance I have had to get into town (couldnt find it anywhere else).

I wasnt very inspired by the online preview - but was surprised that I like quite a few of the patterns in it:  Princess Seam Jacket, Lacy Tea Top, Lace & Chevron Cardi, Abstract Jacket and the Lace Diamond Coat.  I am very tempted to try subscribing for a while Very Happy
Fi

I have.
