Anybody recognise this book??I read a book about 10 years ago and was SURE it was by Philippa Gregory but I can't find anything that resembles it in her list of published books It is set in the C18th I think and about a fairly well-to-do young girl who falls under the influence of a charismatic (but not very nice) Methodist(?) preacher who comes to preach in her village and about how he comes to dominate her until she manages to break free and (I think) meet someone else. I think part of it might be set in Bath.
Ring any bells?

I dont know the book Ali - but it sounds good!!
I have a similar thing - when I was a teenager (many moons ago ) I read a book about a girl who had diabetes and someone bought her a sugar mouse which she couldnt eat because of her condition. It told all the trials and tribulations of being a teenage diabetic. The book was called The Sugar Mouse and I remember borrowing it from the library at least 3 times. I have looked and looked for it again, to read myself and give to my girls to read, and never ever found it

I remember Together Forever by Judy Bloom...it's STILL unavailable in our library...
However this is the sort of book my mam reads, so i'll ask her at the weekend and see if she knows.

Jobo keep trying abebooks.co.uk for yours, cos they do out of print books.
Pictish, I can't help I'm afraid, but what about other authors that you might have been reading at the time. Can you tell us any more about the story? - Funnily enough I've just listened to Jamaica Inn and there are similarities to that so I'm having trouble removing that from my brain!!!!

I don't think I read much historical fiction more classics then - this one was a one-off I tried the Borders book thing cos I was for AGES sure it was a Philippa Gregory one Unless it's just gone out of print. It was a very good book. Maybe it was Philippa something else but it had a name like Meridon which is one of her books but def not that.
Thanks Linz that would be good!!

Pictish, any chance it was a book by Anya Seton? She's written a lot of historical fiction.

Sorry I can't help Pictish, but it is very strange, I have been trying to remember a book as I wanted to read it again and it must have gone in the frequent clear outs DH has and I can't remember title, author etc either. I've been meaning to post on here to see if anyone knew but never got round to it.
Perhaps we need a 'What's this book?' thread Anyway, I'm glad I'm not the only one.

There's a livejournal community called What Was That Book? which would probably be a good place to ask about the book.

The sugar mouse book is by John Branfield - I can't find a single copy for sale online though (and I collect and deal in books, so I've got a pretty good idea where to look)

Oh Wow Minniemoll - at least I have something to go on now - thanks for that!! I'm amazed that someone else knows the book.
Thank you Noo as well about the Abebooks suggestion, although it isnt there unfortunately - but I will definitely keep on looking. I would love to get that book again

You're welcome! I'm sure I read it from the library in the 1980s, along with a book about anorexia called Second Star from the Right, which I was mixing it up with at first. I did some searching on various booksearch sites and came up with the author on the abe forums.
