200 Crochet Blocks - well, not quite! update - 14th Jan
I've started on the Baby Bamboo, i just couldn't resist it any longer!
Three blocks finished and probably another nine to go - i must remember to weigh these three, i'm panicking a bit that i won't have enough yarn to finish 12 blocks
Annnnnyway - here is block #197 - Fretwork
(click for bigness)
block #35 - Tricolour Square
(click for bigness)
and Block #55 - Centred Square
(click for bigness)
god the flash really killed the colours on that one! i need to find my filter thingy
And here's just a little pic of how the fading has affected it, i actually htink it looks lovely, it adds a subtle shading to the finished work, just like a semi-solid hand-dyed yarn

Looks good! I must have another go at crochet - I planned to make a big throw for our sofa. Bought some cotton yarn and I've got the 200 blocks book too.

Thankyou ladies
It is an excellent book and i have to say having Ravelry to look at other people's pattern choices has really helped! Go for it Sharon, you won't regret it!
I was going to go for just one or two different squares and rotate the colours but i have decided to go all out and do all different squares in a random colour sequence.
I am liking the result so far and i've only got three squares done. I think it's the beauty of the bamboo, the shades just go so well together that it doesn't matter which colours you put with each other

Saw these on rav last night, they are lovely and the colours work so well together.

They look beautiful Franney..I was looking at these last night on ravelry
And I agree the faded bits don't make a bad difference but a really pretty shading....I guess everyone will be checking out if their LYS puts stuff in the window now

Awww, thankyou ladies, you're all so lovely
Here's my fourth block - block #54 - Framed Flower
and the fifth - block #189 - Willow
If it brightens up later i shall be re-taking photos as the flash does really horrible things to the colours

Oh, bless you all! Thankyou for the lovely compliments *hugs everyone*
Carola, it's Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo and i have one ball of each colour that the lady in the woolshop had reduced to 50p a ball as it had been sitting in a window display and had faded bits - but i love the effect of the faded bits and so does she
She's having twins in May so this will be a blankie for her and the babies
I have 500g and each square takes about 19g so i should get 26 squares - i really only need 24 though to make two 3x4 blankies so i should have plenty
I'll decide on the joining and borders when i get there but i'll probably use one of the neutral colours for that and get another ball or two
I really love the book, my only problem is deciding which squares to do!!

Here are the fruits of my weekend's crocheting - not much as i was mostly three sheets to the wind
Block #6 - Daisy Chain
Block #7 - Catherine Wheel
Block #8 - Coffee & Cream with a slight mod - the last round should have been in putty but i did it in lilac instead
Now i just have 4 single colour blocks to do and i can think about joining them all together - all those ends to sew in though

Three sheets to the wind????? Franney you surprise me, there was I thinking you were a paragon of virtue and ladylike behaviour

Well, i've found a hook that makes sqaures the same size as last year so i've been getting on with some crochet today! (i lost the bone hook i was using and so this project has been shoved in the corner for the last year!! )
I've decided to make the blanket 5x4 blocks, ten in multicolour and ten in single colours so there'll be one block in each single shade
Only seven blocks to go and i'm done, then i can get to working out how to join them all and edge it

That is gorgeous Franney, I do love those baby bamboo colours. When I've finished my Babette blanket this book is a strong contender for my next afgahn now I've been reminded of yours - and the yarn is a strong contender too, it's really lovely.

Thanks Carola
It's a really lovely book and although there are no charts for the blocks the instructions are well written - easy enough for me to follow anyway!!

Another bunch of squares done on Monday and Tuesday. Unfortunately two of Monday's blocks came out really wrong, so yesterday i had to redo the lilac one, and that took three attempts to get a square i was happy with... the dark pink one still needs some adjustments so that is today's task, along with making block #20!! Can't believe i am nearly done!
Blocks as follows:
14 - pale pink - plain granny
15 - pale blue - sunshine lace
16 - dark pink - webbed lace
17 - lilac - top picture is old vienna, bottom picture is victorian lace
18 - teal blue - edwardian fancy
19 - dark blue - sunray
And here are the 18 completed blocks so far - i was going to wait til i had finished all 20 but i got impatient to see what they all looked like together
The solid colours that are missing are the dark pink and the dark beigey colours. This probably won't be the final layout but i'll have a proper play when i'm finished making the blocks

That looks really lovely franney! I think I might even be tempted to just do one as a sampler so I would have tried out the blocks I liked best. They go really well together

They are looking so good Franney - I reckon half the fun is putting the squares together to see which way you want the order of your blanket to be.
Its going to be an absolutely fantastic blanket

Thanks ladies, i am itching to get going on the last two blocks but i have a full day today so it will have to wait until after i have made some "fridge bottom" soups cos my fresh veg boxcame today and i still have some bits left from Christmas!!
It's amazing how fresh it keeps though, parsnips, potatoes, carrots and onions, all still useable after 3 weeks! I doubt supermarket bought veg would have lasted that long!

Wow those squares are gorgeous, can't wait to see the finished blanket

Those squares are gorgeous Franney. In fact i love them so much I have just ordered this book from Amazon. I can crochet but have a total block when following the patterns.
|
franney
|
Oh, you'll love it malteser, they really are easy to follow - i've found a couple of mistakes in the book i have but they are glaringly obvious and i only noticed it was wrong after i'd done the round and realised i had just carried on instinctively!
I would like to do a whole blanket using "Willow", it's just a gorgeous block

now that is going to be one fantastic blanket. I love the idea of the 10 solid blocks and then mixing up the other 10 - v cool
* I might give the 'love knot' square a go now...I guess i've been inspired hun *
|
franney
|
Oooooh, the love knot, that would be a lovely block to go on this blankie!! I will have to have a think about the solid Minky block now!!
Thanks luv!
|
franney
|
Well, the last block is finshed and i'm about to sit and sew all the ends in - so not looking forward to that bit!!
I also need to have a think about how i want to join them, i quite like the idea of knitted "sashing" but i need to research it a bit first as i don't have the faintest clue how to go about it!!

Well done Franney
I always double crochet my squares together - depending on whether you do right or wrong sides together depends on whether the ridge is on the inside or outside. Is that what you mean by sashing?

What lovely colours and variety of blocks - the book has had to go on my wish list now. (DH nearly bought it for me a while back and I said no thank you )
|
franney
|
Thankyou ladies, i am glad i have finally finsihed the blocks after all this time!
Looby, i mean like this sort of thing:
log cabin
but i'm using the light cream colour instead of black...
I will probably just end up joining them with some sort of sc/ch/sc effort though as i'm not sure i have enough for sashing now that i think about it
Ah well, another 5 squares to sew the ends in on and then i can think about how on earth i am going to block them!!
|
franney
|
Well, i just wanted to post here and say that the blankie is finished!!
I'm about to post in Look What i Made, but here's a sneaky peek
