"Wicked" KALI'm feeling very emboldened, having never started a KAL before - but seeing terri's has inspired me. I have the pattern, I downloaded it a week or so ago. I thought I would recycle my Stylecraft Aran with wool from the frogged Glampyre.
Here is a pattern link - please feel free to join me !

I'm going to knit this as well in stylecraft aran too, Joy. But i want to knit tuilip first, then maybe foxglove, as summer cardigans. Although I may change my mind if it doesn't warm up and join you immediately, instead of later.

I might be tempted to join in on this, after Ivy is finished.
Alice
I would very much like to join in... I've just got the pattern and now I need to try and work out how to make the neck less wide..ie less revealing. If I can sort this out then I'll be in. I've got Barbara Walkers Top Down book so I might be able to sort it out. I'll have a think over the weekend.

I am so tempted by this but really want to do Green gable as well. I can't really afford to buy anything else at the moment as I really do have too much stash.
chrissy
I have bought the pattern you bad lot, do you think I will be able to use the dk I bought from lidl the other week, it states on the ball band to use 3.75 needles. I am no good at subbing what so ever but really can't afford to buy any more wool, or I do have 600g of the lidl cotton but in 2 colourways maybe I could do one lot of colour for the neck band, sleeves pocket and bottom and the rest in the other what do you think?
Chrissy
KnittingLadybird
I think I may be in for this too...I like the fact that a few of you are going to use stylecraft aran yarn (which I can get hold of in abundance as is the state of yarn shops in my village lol)....and to be able to make a lovely top for a fiver is fab .
Now, one question...the yarn used is 'worsted' and falls inbetween dk and aran....so does this mean a bigger needle may be required? as aran is at the thicker end? anyhow...i'll let you know asap if i'm deffo in
Aknita
Maybe a 5mm Linz - I think I'm going to play with needle size over the weekend. I'm all excited now!
Chrissy - I know nowt about owt when it comes to subbing tbh, but maybe you'd need to use your cotton doubled to obtain tension?
chrissy
I am just going to have a play around, I will try the dk lidl stuff first then see what happens. shouldn't be starting something new but hey why not
Chrissy
KnittingLadybird
Chrissy....if you get the tension in DK let us know....I have loads that I really could do with using up lol. I think because 'worsted' is the inbetween, I reckon with some tweaking we could get the tension with both Dk and aran...

I was just reading the message board on the zephyrstyle site & they have a thread about the neck that might help you (& me!)

I used aran weight, I used bigger needles than the patter suggested to get the same gauge
I think I might join the kal though and make a cotton wicked
Aknita
So 5mm would do it do you think then Sarah?
KnittingLadybird
oooh cotton would be lovely...saving mine for gable lol....need new circs for that tho.
terri
I think so Joy! I used 5mm for the cash aran, and was hoping to use all seasons cotton for a short sleeved on in lilac that my sister bought me for my birthday (thats if I have enough to do both wicked and the vogue cabled domino bolero thingy ) otherwise it will be navy asc. But I think I'll try 5mm again
Aknita
Thanks Sarah - btw it's lovely to have you with us Jeanette
KnittingLadybird
I had a play earlier with some aran...i used a 5.5mm and was half a stitch out but I was one stitch out on the 5mm.....obviously that's just my knitting tension but i hope it gives some idea of the region lol
i got 18 and a half sts on the 5.5mm and 17 sts on the 5mm

Linz - in a fortnight I should be getting some knit picks, so if you want to borrow my addi turbo bamboos circs then, PM me.

I have cast on aswell, I have done the neck and 6 rows of the next bit, I amalmost to guage using double thickness of the lidl yarn I bought on size 5 needles. will post pics when I have done some more

Jeanette that's looking lovely! And well done Chrissy too.
Now - I am in a dilemma. Recommended tension with the pattern is 18sts and 26 rows on 4.5mm needles. I was going to knit the 40-43" size.
Now, tension with Stylecraft should be 18sts and 24 rows. only 2 rows out every 4" - so, should I go with and just add in extra rows accordingly or change to 5mm needles, get the length and knit the 36-39" size which may turn out a bit bigger, bearing in mind I have another stone to lose?
terri
Looks lovely jeanette!!! I like the colour
Aknita
Well, I get a tension "square" of around 3.75" x 4" on 4.5 mm needles - my row count of 24 was fine but stitch count was out - so 5mm needles should make it right. Off to knit another square on 5mm needles now......
eta have just finished my square on 5mm needles ( well Denise size 8 actually ) and have 4" now. It's a shade over 4" long, but it's near as makes no difference and as I'm tall I won't worry about that. I just wonder which size to knit
Hurrah for tension squares though !
Nanatoo
Phew, I'm decorating now - really didn't want to but it needs doing
Anyhow, I've cast on and done a few inches using my Simple Knitted Bodice yarn (DB cash aran in red) Well, it seemed easier, having had to frog the SKB. I'll just have to get some more yarn for that!
I'll do pics when I can get a bit organised, this room is going to take all week I think.

Hello folks, I'm not about much 'cos I'm not well but I managed it and with a pocket too! I love it. Debbie Bliss cash aran, shade 610. I'm pretty sure it toook fewer than 4 balls too but I'd need to check that when I can think straight.

Oh that's beautiful - and I am so ashamed of myself for starting this KAL and getting sidetracked by other things. It's a gorgeous colour and suits you so well.

I just back from holiday yesterday so I hope to get back into this so that I can finish it. Not much to do but hope it fits I have been away for 2 weeks and the diet has been ignored. I think I may even have put on
Nanatoo that is beautiful such a lovely colour.

I've just cast on for this but I think I am the only one in this now Looks like only Nanatoo finished hers.
I have got some Sirdar Bonus Aran in a sort of strawberry smoothie colour to do this - it is the first time I have attempted top down in the round and I have never completed anything in the round before
But it seems a very well written pattern. I'm making the long sleeve version with the kangaroo pocket. I have done the neckband and am just about to start increasing. It is REALLY weird seeing the stitches grow upside down
CJ

well, I want to make it, but still haven't got the yarn - unless I can use my handspun laceweight.

Can you spin aran??

I have this in my queue but not on "page 1" IYSWIM
Must admit I quite like knitting top down, as you can try it on as you go and it's easier to add length etc.

I hadn't realised the only sewing up was the pocket It's good fun the way it is constructed and it's made me think again about knitting things in the round

I feel very because I didn't ever cast on I don't think.

I wouldn't worry about it but I wonder why not??

I think I thought it would make me look fat, if I am really honest Ali
And ever since Myrna I worry about accentuating certain areas with the more fitted knits.
FatCat

Glad you're enjoying it Ali - I know I really enjoyed making mine, and I found it a really quick knit too. The no-sewing-up part is a real bonus Looking forward to pics of yours
I might do another, really tempted by the short-sleeved version. I'm thinking about it ....

Well you can adjust it you know as you go along - that's what I like about it - I've got another 28 rows of increases and then I get to try it on and decide whether to make it bigger - I'm between 2 sizes so I'm starting smaller as I have a small frame and going in and out as necessary But you can do a looser fitting one whatever you want really - not all the ones on Rav are close fitting Joy. I just want to get into top down/circular knitting and this seems a nice easy introduction to it. The thought of no seams is very attractive
Just going to put a pic of my progress so far FC I like the short sleeve ones too - in fact my sleeves are only going to be as long as I have wool for!!
pictish
This is it so far - Sirdar Bonus Aran in Tudor Rose on 5mm cheapy metal circulars (the bamboos cost almost as much as the wool ). I am hoping to get it out of the one ball which cost £6.99

not at the moment!! I can't spin specific yet, I just spin how the fibre wants to be and that seems 4ply or lace for me.

I'm still thinking about this one.
I've got some yarn and the pattern - but have been frightened off making a jumper for me due to having recently finished one which looked, frankly, hideous - mind you in hindsight not entirely sure why I thought cream Sirdar Ocean would make a good summer top even if it did look good in the pattern, it's too warm, too bulky and so not me. And as DH pointed out, who knows how many pins are strategically placed in the back of the jumper on the model
Love the colour of yours Pictish, will keep watching this thread and who knows, I might get brave enough .......
pictish
I think it is one of those patterns that looks good on lots of people Hoping so anyway
pictish
I'm almost up to the trying on bit I'm really enjoying this tho it takes a while to do a row so you feel you're not getting anywhere fast but when I get to this point I will have done the body from neck to bottom of armholes
I have as usual been doing lots of other things
KnittingLadybird
oooh I forgot I was actually in this ...i've just divided the sleeves and done about an inch on the body. Will get a pic shortly

just finished the side decreases...decided to knit a little longer than pattern stated before doing decs, I started them just past 'the girls'.
pictish
Oooh you've done loads - looking good!!!!
KnittingLadybird
I just need to tink about with the pocket pattern so it matches the neck...though I had thought of doing it plain and using the honeycomb pattern around the bottom and on sleeve cuff. I just can't decide. I suppose I could just leave the pattern on the neck as a feature....ah well!
pictish
If it's going to be a real hassle I would just leave the rest of it as is - it will look fine I think!!
KnittingLadybird
yes the more I think about it, i'm going to do the pocket plain with the moss stitch edges (cos I think the honeycomb might look a tad bulky) and just do moss round the bottom and on the sleeves (though I might change my mind about the sleeves before then )
pictish
Yeah I think the moss stitch will go well with the honeycomb neck edging
KnittingLadybird

That's that sorted then - cheers Ali
