I finished this yesterday, an amazing book - beautifully written so you can imagine yourself in the places and the times described (a lot of it is in the form of flashbacks to WWII) and the characters are incredibly real. Don't read it if you don't want any sadness though as it has some heartwrenchingly sad parts though it is a very heartwarming book too. I can see why it got into the top 100 reads
You often see it in charity shops and I got mine for 30p

Oh, I bought this when it first came out. It's a lovely story - one of my favourite re-reads.

Oh I agree Ali - its a wonderful book, I read it years ago but I remember it well.
Old fashioned and highbrow in a lovely way I think.
If you liked this, you will really like Coming Home by the same author - its all very "posh", in a cucumber sandwiches and ginger beer kind of way - a bit like a grown up Enid Blyton book I think. The film with Joanna Lumley as the lead actress was fantastic - with her cut glass accent and acting skills - she played a fabulous part.
I want to read it again now |

I've never read The Shell Seekers, but I *loved* Coming Home and I've also read a couple of her shorter stories, the titles of which escape me at the moment! _________________ "I can resist everything except temptation" - Oscar Wilde.
