Hi, I'm getting a sewing machine for my birthday and was looking for some advice. I've used a (very old sewing machine) once and a long time ago. I plan on using it to make linings for my knitted/felted bags, to make bags and maybe some clothing later on. What should I be looking for? Any great beginner machines out there. I don't have a huge budget probably about £150.

D'oh! I just notice someone has already started the exact same thread. Serves me right for trying to cook a roast dinner and post at the same time. Moderator feel free to delete!

I've got a Janome 525s 'sewist' which I love! It's my first sewing machine though so I don't exactly have a lot of experience! I got it for Xmas a couple of years ago - haven't used it a great deal until recently - I've now got the sewing bug big time! It's got lots of features but I find it easy to use. Janome have quite a few cheaper machines too. Whatever you do, try and find a good stockist - you should be able to try out the machines first (I didn't though as I wouldn't have known a good machine from a bad one!).

I'll leave this thread open as the previous one was started some months ago. Wink
