I have now cast on for my second pair of socks (bit miraculous after only doing one pair so far, but maybe I'm on a roll now ). This is the modified Cowgirl Slipper Sock pattern from Interweave Winter 2006 in Posh Yarns Emily. I love the yarn so much - everything about it from the feel (soft soft soft) to the colours (which are a bit brighter irl but still pastel) to the way that Sprite's ladybird stitchmarker matches this yarn so well (he's sat on a petal! ).
However, there are two problems so far and I'm debating whether to frog or not (I don't mind frogging but only if I know that the problem will be solved by doing so). Firstly, I used the Old Norwegian aka Twisted German cast on for these socks. The top of the sock is curling over quite badly and hiding part of the pattern. I don't know if this is because I cast on with a bigger pin (3.75mm) and hence caused the problem, or if its the pattern. The other problem is that these are slightly too big for me. I'm knitting on 2.75mm pins which is the recommended size for Emily and I cant reduce the number of stitches as the pattern calls for multiples of 11 so I cast on 55. I could go down to 2.5mm but would it suit this yarn as its quite thick? Any suggestions before I blindly carry on knitting and end up with socks I'm not happy with

I've used that yarn on 2.5m needles and there was no problem with it, it just depends on whether or not the pattern would look too dense IYSWIM.
Also. the German cast on is very stretchy on its own so I would suggest either using that cast on orgoing up a size needle but not both.
Hope that helps, the yarn and pattern look lovely so far but if you're not happy with the curling top then its probably better to frog now rather than later. _________________ Current wips-too many to list

Sort of what I was thinking re the cast on Catknit. I'm wondering if I cast on with the 2.75mm pins if the sock will fit better IYSWIM. It hasn't taken me long to knit so far so I'm going to frog and play around with the needle size. Sometimes we just know frogging is inevitable but we try to avoid it... _________________

Why not try with 2.5mm seperately and see if it makes any difference. I love this yarn but found that the cuff is very stretchy. I used twisted rib for the cuff and it still stretched a lot. There were some suggestions to use an other yarn for the cuff, but your sock mightn't suit this. _________________ " Onen i-Estel Edain, U-chebin estel anim"

What gauge does the pattern ask for PL? If it were me I'd swatch with the 2.5mm & see if I could achieve the gauge required if you haven't done with 2.75mm.
I don't like my socks loose either as I find them uncomfortable to wear. _________________ Cheers

I frogged this sock and re-did the cast on using a 3mm pin (yes, I know it was still a little bit bigger than the 2.75mm I'm knitting on but I'm paranoid my socks will be too tight at the tops which I can stand). This has fixed the problem, and there is no more curling which was hiding the pattern. I've stuck with the 2.75mm as I realised it was just the tops that were too big before. I've also knitted an extra pattern repeat as I'm using much thinner yarn (hence gauge would have been no help - the original pattern uses Buffalo yarn which is sooooooo expensive!). I'm loving these socks, both how they look and knitting them _________________
