Ventured into the fenced off area of our garden today. Was thinking it would be ideal for growing the odd vegetable. I found a HUGE builders bag so used it to put the old dead weed heads in and it looks a lot tidier but and it is a big but .... I think the neighbours have used it to dump their unwanted rubble cos there is a lot of stone under the grass/weeds at one end And I will also have to use strong weedkiller to get rid of the docks/nettles/grass before I can even think about digging it I was thinking that if push came to shove I could turn the bottom end into a rockery and grow veggies the other end The whole area is probably 12 - 15ft long by 8ft. I gave the people on the passing trains a great view of my very large frame in a pair of track suit bottoms

Sounds like a big job to clear it.
Could you have a garden clearing bbq, thats what we did to get our plot up and running.
All the family and some of the neighbours worked and us ladies fed them all as well tidying up, cos we can multitask lol. _________________ Fi, The Beach Babe |

Well I used weedkiller on a couple of wee sections a couple of weeks ago, dead within 24 hours my backside The nettles and unidentifed flower weed look like they were missed (and I know they weren't). So not sure what to do with that end, maybe try and cover it with something to cut out the sunlught At the other end the grass all died though the docks look like they are still with us, but I did manage to dig a small patch and pick up a load of stones, and this is the non-rubble end Can't decide whether to get a greenhouse, or not. I do like my peppers and cucumber _________________ ravelry id : janice61

Could you not cover it with cardboard and then put a no dig raised bed on top??? - I did that on top of grass and it's worked well. I used old scaffold boards for the edging so it's about 8 inches, though in hindsight a bit taller may have been better. But it's great for beans and courgetts and all the squash type things. _________________ Claire

I could try that, though not sure about the docks or the purple loose strife, percocious little devils Think I will borrow DH's strimmer Do have plenty cardboard, think I will give that a go. Thank you for the suggestion _________________ ravelry id : janice61

Saltwater works well on weeds too.
You could still make raised beds but use it to get rid of the weeds. _________________ Fi, The Beach Babe |

Fi, can you give me some more info on using saltwater please? Have you tried it yourself and had success? Can other stuff be grown there immediately or do you have to wait a few months for the salt to dissipate? What sort of weeds does it work on? How much salt to water should we use?
Sorry for all the questions _________________

Was wondering the same Though I doubt it will work on one of the weeds, I was down the beach with the dogs and there growing on the sand dunes was the white flower weed _________________ ravelry id : janice61

I have used it with success, didn't measure just a good handful or so of salt with cold water.
I wouldn't grow anything there for a bit just in case.
The weeds go brown and curl up quite quickly.
good luck. _________________ Fi, The Beach Babe |

Nothing more satisfying than seeing a brown weed Will try that one, once I get more salt, I'm running low.
