John, who is a member of this forum, posted a method of knitting buttonholes on an American forum around four years ago, and his method is so good and so neat that I would like to reproduce it here exactly as he wrote it:

Here's a tip for buttonholes.
When you cast on the stitches in the next row after the cast off/bind off to complete the buttonhole, cast on one extra stitch (usually knitters have to turn the work round to do the casting on) When you turn back, flip the first stitch on the left hand needle on to the right, and pass the 'extra' cast on stitch forward over. Then slip this first stitch back on to the left hand needle and knit or purl the stitch as usual. It's not as fiddly as it seems and it makes a firm upper edge to the hole

I've tried this method and it really is excellent; it doesn't leave that little loop of thread at the top corner that you get if you construct a cast-off-and-on buttonhole in the usual way.

That sounds good. Is it worth having a 'tips and tricks' forum or stickied thread with things like this in it, do you think? I know it's just the sort of thing I'll only half remember and end up searching all over the BB for at a later date!
