OK so I am super impressed at Binty with her giving up smoking and starting running, and all you girls were just the best support last year when I did my race for life. So I am offering up a challenge.

The Race for life is 5km (a tad over 3miles).  The deal is that you time yourself doing that sort of distance now (or sometime during January), then you register and enter for your local race for life when they open the registrations (usually I think Feb/March) The races take place from end of May to Middle of July.  Whoever has the best percentage increase in their time from now to their race day will get a donation of £50 to their race page, and a £25 gift voucher to GetKnitted to spend while nursing their highly tightened muscles!!!

If you have never run or walked that kind of distance before then I would suggest you take an hour as your starting time, as I know that a steady walk is 3 miles an hour.  Personally I am going to take my last years time of 38 mins as my starting time, because I know I can do that, and I want to improve.  I will be 40 in May and this is my way of proving to myself that 40 is nothing but a number, I intend to run the whole way!!!

We will use this thread to chart our progress, and spur each other on..... So who's up for the challenge????????

Noo's starting time 38 mins

Oh my goodness Oh my goodness!!!  What can I say  Very Happy  I am totally bowled over by this Noo

I am going to enter the race for life - this is one of my goals for 2008.  At the moment I cant run that distance (which is a bit embarrassing) but I will run the whole thing.

At the moment I can only run 2 minutes, walk 2 minutes for 30 mintues which just seems sooooo totally pathetic  Embarassed

It's not pathetic at all - you were a smoker so you need to accept that your lungs will take time to get all lovely and stretchy again. And I still walked and ran when I did the race for life last year and I'd been training for 4 months!  You just need to sort out a starting time for now, so even if you walk/run for 30 mins then walk the rest.......... I think you have every chance of beating me cos you have someone to run with, which makes a lot of difference.

Is the race for life girls only?

I did it with a friend last year, but loads and loads do it alone - it's so busy that you'll probably not be able to stay with a friend anyway. We both split up after only about half a km.  You spend all the before time with your family so it's only the actual race that you do, and there's likely to be over 500 runners........  I bought MrNoo running trainers for Christmas - I don't think he was terribly impressed, but he smiled sweetly!!!!!

ROFL  my OH also bought me 2 pairs of running socks with left and right on, but the first pair I opened had two left feet which really made me giggle.  I have to take them back to the shop on Monday when I got to town!

Okay, I'm in and I HATE running.... something to do with having these large floppy lumps stuck to the front of my chest... but since that's what the Race for Life is all about, that seems appropriate.

I did a women's 10k run in Glasgow about 6 years ago and it took me an hour and a half  Shocked  I did the training in about seven weeks, was 2 stone overweight (all very stupid) but I "ran" - for which read lolloped - every single step of the way.

This time I am (at least) 3 stone overweight  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked  but I have started walking already, every day, so I'm going to be sensible and say that I won't run AT ALL (apart from the Test Time/Distance thing as a bench mark) until at least February, I'll just try to walk faster.
