I have just finished this book - I was literally turning the pages in a frenzy to find out the next bit.
Set in the 20's just after the Great War it tells the tale of a young singer from the poor end of Portsmouth and how she meets a "gentleman" lawyer in the course of her work.
It really is a brilliant story - very atmospheric, takes you right back there to the 20's and what life what like for the lower/middle classes.
I really recommend it

I read this ages ago Jobo. Sad isn't it? 'Specially the end, poor Coventry. Might dig it out again. Quite poignant at the moment too with all the WW1 remembrance stuff about.
